Tsunami dead were idiots for being too slow, says minister

By Danielle Demetriou, The Daily Telegraph, October 19, 2011

Japan's disaster minister has come under fire for calling tsunami victims "idiots" for not moving to safety quickly enough in the March 11 disaster.

Tatsuo Hirano, the minister for disaster management, made his controversial comment at a meeting with Democratic Party of Japan colleagues in the town of Nihonmatsu in the north-eastern Fukushima prefecture. According to reports by Fuji TV, Mr Hirano told the gathering: "There were those who moved to safety and thought 'we'll be safe here'. Then there were -idiots like my old classmate who didn't take shelter. He's dead now."

Mr Hirano's comments will embarrass prime minister Yoshihiko Noda and the ruling party as he was promoted to his current position after his predecessor was forced to resign three months ago for offensive comments.

The former disaster management minister, Ryu Matsumoto, stepped down after he publicly berated the governor of Miyagi for being late and refused to shake his hand during a visit to the tsunami-hit north-east region.

What is it about power -- particularly nuclear power that makes the lizard brain shine through? Money? Prestige? Power?

4. There was nowhere to go for
many people. That area is fairly flat for quite a distance. They would have to have started very early and be world class to even think of outrunning it, and it still would have caught them. If there had been hills very close or at least if the land had been rising, they might have made it.

IDIOT!

10. i don't know how he meant it , there are people who sometimes just refuse to leave
but there were many who couldn't and i remember hearing some of the warning system failed .

but like in AMerica wher epeople feel the need to get close to certain storms and things when they are warned and end up being hurt and dying.
