4. was so fast, it seems like it was small but boy did it shift things
here in downtown SF.

one fast, swift movement and you heard the building flex.

13. You are probably much closer to the epicenter than you were then.
Several years ago we had an aftershock to Northridge DIRECTLY UNDER MY HOUSE, lol. It was only about a 3 but it was quite a jolt and scared me briefly. 3 blocks away you could barely feel it.

Perhaps it is the faultline or depth that made it feel that way.

12. because instead of a little 4.2 roller, it was 4.2 all in one swift shift
sort of like the building took one deliberate step down the street.

6. my guess is between 2 & 4 on the scale.
we felt both waves in our house below the Hayward fault. Between Hi. 13 & 580

Epicenter apparently on or near UC Berkeley campus (2 mi. or so from Oakland).

21. When I lived in the Berkeley dorms (Units 1-3)...

we learned that the buildings were designed to fall inward in the event of a major earthquake, in order to keep the roads clear.
