EARTHQUAKE centered in Berkeley: 3.9 magnitude |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-20-11 05:00 PM by noiretextatique
Scared the heck out of me and my cat and knocked some stuff off the shelf. All appears to be well, but waiting for aftershocks. I need a  :scared: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/nc71667366.php

1. I didn't feel it at all. |
|
Though, to be fair, I was sailing down Solano Ave on my bike when it apparently hit.
I still have yet to feel a single tremor since moving here =(

5. Everyone was so excited |
|
Because I wanted to feel just a *small* earthquake for ages, just to feel like I live in California. And here's one in Berkeley while I was at work near Cedar and Shattuck, but I decided to run an errand on my bike at the moment it struck.
Alas. My phone is lighting up with texts "Yay, you felt one!"
No, I didn't =(

6. According to my friends and family . . . |
|
I'm pretty much the only person in the area who didn't feel it, lol. Must've been because I was moving quickly downhill at the time.

3. My office is practically sitting on top of the Hayward Fault where it happened |
|
Scared all of us too! My large office window rattled enough that I took off into the hallway. Everyone else did too.
Strangely enough the campus had an earthquake drill just this morning.

I felt the building gradually bounce up and down, then it was if something slammed into the building.

I seem to always be asleep, or in an elevator, or something, and usually don't notice them.
This one was nice and long :)

But I can't imagine how you do. I guess you can run, but you can't hide... :( A friend of mine moved to the L.A. area and was completely freaked out when he experienced his first earthquake. Stay safe! :scared: :pals:

I'm right here in snow country and I hate it, but at least we get some warning. I think tornadoes scare me the most, no warning and nowhere to go, but earthquakes are equally inescapable. This winter, I'll try and count my blessings... ;) :hi:

I"m pretty sure I was awake at the time it was supposed to have happened. Strange that people 30 miles further away say they felt it. Is that possible?

37. Very short, pronounced vertical jolt where I was. Perhaps one second. |
|
I expected another shake to follow. It was unusual for me, having grown up with 4.0s as a fairly regular occurrence. Those tended to shake more slowly, and for a few more seconds.

Is that common to get a second quake and aftershocks after quakes as small as 4.0?
