Stating the obvious. Somebody has to say it.
People making McJob wages don't have nearly as much to spend on consumer stuff as people who have well-paid jobs.

People who have to pay for health/dental/vision care out of pocket have that much less to spend on consumer stuff.

Unemployed people have very little, if anything, to spend on consumer stuff.

Underemployed people have much less to spend on consumer stuff than they did when/if they had a good paying job.

If the US needs more people buying more consumer stuff in order to get out of the current economic slump, we are in deep doo-doo.

(But who don't know that, other than a lot of well-paid economists, politicians, pundits, corporate big shots, etc. Or else they know it but would never publicly admit it.)

1. Well, at least we have Qaddaafi being killed and some new bad
guys in Africa to concentrate on, these small distractions help a little to stop us thinking about the more pressing issues, such as the ones you mentioned, like putting food on the table and the horrible economy for millions of Americans. (sarcasm for those who can't tell)

3. Lot of people still supporting non-union workers over union workers in the US
Logical conclusion of doing that is eventually everyone is going to have their own wages and benefits being patterned after non-union workers rather than union workers. Regardless of what someone does for a living their benefits and wages will take a hit. And they are.

I know this is not a popular subject around here but every time someone goes out and purchases a car made by non-union auto workers instead of union auto workers their own pay and benefits will suffer. May not be instantly? But it will come.

Lot of Americans happily cut their own throats.
