If you really want a no holds barred look at big city politics... |
|
Check out the new Starz series Boss...
Now I worked for the Chairman of the Democratic Party here in Cleveland, Ohio for 8 years and saw the bargaining, the ethnic considerations, dealing with the unions and trying to get things done and it wasn't pretty or always effective.
By the way the Chairman was also a mayor for a suburb and then a county Commissioner. He also served on the Board of Elections.
Granted, Cleveland is no Chicago, but from the sweeping FBI sweep through the political Establishment here in Cuyahoga County in 2008 caught over 50 political figures in it net, including my ex Boss, Jimmy Dimora, you might say we are closer than you think.
Now I know for a fact that when I was doing his books, he was squeaky clean. But after I left in 2001 when I started to come down with my illness, he allegedly went off the straight and narrow.
Back to the point. Watch Boss. For a lot of people who do politics on this board, this stuff will come as no shock, but for those who never got to see behind the curtain, well, it's pretty spot on and explains why things get done the way they do.
Building an effective governing coalition is hard work. Every council room is full of egos run amok just like the congress people we see in action on the cable.
Watch the show. It's stark, bleak and very entertaining.
