UPenn: U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor cancels Wharton speech

U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, the Republican majority leader in the U.S. House, canceled his scheduled speech at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business because it was going to be open to the first 300 people who showed up. Given that hundreds of Occupy Philadelphia protesters were planning to march from City Hall to the campus to protest the speech, that could have been lively audience.

"The Office of the Majority Leader was informed last night by Capitol Police that the University of Pennsylvania was unable to ensure that the attendance policy previously agreed to could be met," Cantor spokeswoman Laena Fallon said in an email. "Wharton is a educational leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, and the Majority Leader appreciated the invitation to speak with the students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the UPenn community."

Cantor had expected that his speech, on income disparity in the country, would be open to the media, Wharton students and faculty and guests of the university.

We can't help but feel a strong current of irony running through all this, since Cantor's Congressional office put out a curious YouTube video this week that was all about him promoting success and leadership. What was it Woody Allen said about success? Oh right: "Eighty percent of success is just showing up."

3. Was the speech titled "How to make sure the people on top STAY there?"
Isn't that what his aide said?

21. That is what the aide said was a focus of the speech.
'The Virginia congressman, the most recent and prominent Republican whipping boy for Democrats, is heading to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania to talk about income disparity and how Republicans believe the government could help fix it, an aide said. The speech will zero in on how Washington could help a “a single working mom…a small business owner…and how we make sure the people at the top stay there,” the aide said.'

18. He's not stupid ...
... he knows how incredibly unpopular he is. He knows how foolish he will appear with an audience booing all his bad ideas.

He should be afraid!

20. Brave Sir Eric ran away, Bravely, ran away...away...
When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes, brave Sir Eric turned about
And gallantly he chickened out
Bravely talking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave, Sir Eric

23. The GOP is loath to be outside their bubble. They know that if they
are seen to be called out by OWS or any other citizen...it is a movement that could grow. And they accuse Obama of being in campaign mode.
