4. Sadly, I was expecting that a dead body would come up sooner or later in this story.

5. How long does a person need to be dead for a cadaver dog to pick it up?
Doesn't make sense to me that a person who just dies would smell different than a few minutes before.

Googling gives me 1 person saying 2 hours, but wondering if anyone knows? I also found hits for positive ID based on second hand furniture from a place where someone had been dead.

It greatly depends on the temperature but I thought a person had to be dead at least 3-5 hours before the normal decomposition processes reaches a level where gas from bacterial decomposition reach the level of detection.

It's not uncommon, and probably in this case, for the bedding to have elements of vomit (babies vomit) which hadn't cleaned properly and which gave a close enough signature that the dog considered it a match.

I'm not keen on looking it up (not a fan of gory photos) but I was watching a documentary on the French revolution which talked about the massive number of dead and how they were placed in the open. It was a great documentary (it's called "Filthy Cities" and it's the episode on France, you can find it online to watch at Vimeo) and they actually brought in an expert on decomposition who basically stated that there are two stages of decay, starting with "dry" decomposition and moving into "wet" decomposition. I got the impression that a person would have to have been dead for at least...at least something like 5 hours...before anything gas-wise would be put off.

a man was seen carrying a baby in the area. The baby was not covered and did not have any warm clothes on. It is possible the baby was already dead. That's just my theory.
