The U.N. Security Council is set to meet Friday to vote on a resolution that condemns violence in Yemen, where demonstrators, government forces and rival factions have been embroiled in months of unrest.
The move would demand the Yemeni government allow peaceful demonstrations to take place and end government crackdowns on civilians, but it would not sanction embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Earlier this week, several people were killed during clashes with Yemeni security forces after anti-government protests filled the streets of the country's capital Crowds had marched through downtown Sanaa, where government forces allegedly gunned down protesters.
The official expressed hope that the resolution would pass with a unanimous vote from the 15-member council. It would be an indication of greater consensus on the council, the official said. Russia and China issued a rare double veto of a resolution condemning the violence in Syria this month.
