Petition on Whitehouse.gov website has 70,000+ signatures
https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/legalize-and-regulate-marijuana-manner-similar-alcohol/y8l45gb1

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:

Legalize and Regulate Marijuana in a Manner Similar to Alcohol.

We the people want to know when we can have our "perfectly legitimate" discussion on marijuana legalization. Marijuana prohibition has resulted in the arrest of over 20 million Americans since 1965, countless lives ruined and hundreds of billions of tax dollars squandered and yet this policy has still failed to achieve its stated goals of lowering use rates, limiting the drug's access, and creating safer communities.

Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve the results in the future that it has never achieved in the past?

Created: Sep 22, 2011

SIGNATURES NEEDED BY OCTOBER 22, 2011 TO REACH GOAL OF 5,000:

1. I had forgotten about that. I remember signing it a month ago.
So, is the WH going to step to the plate and address it as promised? If I recall, when I signed it the day it launched, there were well over 10,000 signatures and the goal was only 5,000 (in 30 days, not one).

4. Doesn't matter: it won't happen any time soon.
So long as there are Republicans in Congress, it would take massively overwhelming public support, like 75 percent, for anything like this to even be remotely possible to pass.

5. The Democrats have advanced the drug war too.
Maybe more than republicans.

I suspect The Obama Team will make a dismissive statement about stoners and doritos and sweep the petition under the rug.

6. And no wonder it won't happen, if we keep bashing the shit out of our own people.
Gods forbid we recognize that one and only one party is likely to pursue this and work to create a favorable environment for them; it's much more effective to complain that nobody is catering to us, then take our ball and go home.

7. It's the only thing that could possibly be effective.
Continuing to support politicians after they've stabbed you in the back repeatedly is no way to earn their respect.
