Texas Prisoners Don’t Get Lunch On Weekends ...

It’s no secret that many prisoners are better fed than poor families, receiving three square meals a day everyday of the week, unless of course those prisoners are in Texas. In an attempt to cut back on food costs some facilities in the state have began cutting weekend lunches from their routine.

The practice began in April when the state began serving what they call “brunch” (their combination breakfast/lunch) which is provided to inmates between 5am and 7am.

Under their “brunch” plan the states prison system has shied away from American Correctional Association guidelines which calls for three meals per day, although some wiggle room is allowed under those rules.

Under Texas law prisoners are only required to be fed “three times in any 24-hour period,” which under their current feeding schedule would mean they are within their own guidelines if the prisoner begins eating his weekend brunch at the same time each day.

1. When corporations start cutting back on costs
with their prison operations we will see more and more prison riots.

2. I honestly can't think of anything dumber
than creating an entire prison full of hungry criminals.

I'd hate to be the correctional officers on duty when the prisoner's decide they have nothing to lose by revolting.

4. Me too, food is about all they have to look forward to.....
they should bring in these policy wonks and let them work a shift or two on the serving lines.

7. You can say that again
What's next? Will they not give prisoners their meds for psychiatric problems, as another cost-cutting measure?

The insanity....

3. Call me cynical, I think this was done for two reasons.
To not have to pay for the meal, and to make more money on commissary sales. Someone was crunching numbers and saw it as a win-win situation for the Texas prison system. :(

5. You are right.
But what this does, is creates more opportunities for contraband and more opportunities for extended sentences (especially for the more desirable workers).

IF they really needed to save money on food, why not put the prisoners that are able to work making and tending gardens to supplement the food budget? Instead of contracting the cheap labor out to corporations and taking jobs away from people that are not in prison? Now, my friend, THAT is a win-win!

9. Brunch to be served between 5am and 7 am?
To me brunch was always a large meal to be eaten between 10:30 am and 12:00 pm., and in lieu of breakfast and lunch.

13. And you would be right!
Brunch is a large meal served as a mid to late morning meal, not so early in the morning that prisoners are starving again by lunch time.
