Tons Of Radioactive Waste Are Piling Up In Japan As Number Of Reported Hotspots Grow

Robert Johnson | Oct. 21, 2011, 12:27 PM

<snip>Because Japan's official agencies are refusing to test, citizens are buying up handheld Geiger counters in record numbers — shocked by what they're finding.

Strontium, cesium, and plutonium at levels 20 times greater than government limits are being found at schools, ballparks, and apartment buildings.

Locals are concerned, yet even the national press seems more likely to echo government statements than report citizens findings with stories of contamination appearing almost exclusively in the international press.

The New York Times spoke with Kiyoshi Toda, a medical doctor who specializes in teaching radiation science at Nagasaki University who says: “Radioactive substances are entering people’s bodies from the air, from the food. It’s everywhere. But the government doesn’t even try to inform the public how much radiation they’re exposed to.”

2. The Japanese need to seek info on the internet
It's the only place where you can find the truth anymore, it seems.

5. Here's an article from the "Internet" about Greenpeace and their testing
http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/greenpeace-urges-tougher-radiation-screening-seafood-labeling-rules

"The environmental pressure group said it tested 60 seafood samples bought at stores in eastern Japan operated by five major supermarket chains and found 34 of them with radioactive cesium-134 and cesium-137.

"More concerning, however, is that there is no labeling that notifies consumers if the seafood had been screened, making it impossible for them to make informed decisions,” Hanaoka said in a statement.

The announcement came as Japanese consumers remain frustrated over limited information about the exact level of food contamination, while the government has sought to calm public fears and overcome mistrust of official radiation surveys.

It's bullshit that you have to REALLY go looking for any info, since we're sure not getting it in our national press. (why is that, I wonder?)

4. Nope....they don't give shit.
Already Japanese freight has been turned away at ports because the radiation detectors went off.
There are credible claims that rice, tea and seaweed that tested high is simply diluted with other batches to bring the "total" radiation down to allowable levels deemed "safe".
I won't buy ANYTHING from Japan right now.
