Wal-Mart cuts health coverage for some employees

Wal-Mart is eliminating health insurance coverage for new part-time employees who work less than 24 hours a week, dropping coverage of spouses for new workers who put in 24 to 33 hours a week, and will cut by 50 percent the amount it contributes to employees’ health-care expense accounts.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based discount retailer cited rising costs as the reason for the changes, which take effect in January. Nationwide, employer-sponsored health-insurance premiums are up 9 percent, and are forecast to increase 5 percent in 2012.

The Wal-Mart health-insurance changes also include higher premiums, from $10 to $90 each pay period, for employees who smoke, and up to 40-percent spikes in certain other coverage plans. As is the case for many retailers, employee health insurance premiums are relatively low but the deductibles can reach as high as 20 percent of a worker’s yearly pay.
