Miss Representation is a MASTERPIECE, Please see it immediately.
Fellow DU'ers: Miss Representation is a masterpiece. Please watch it as soon as you can. It has been airing on Oprah's Network OWN.

About The Film
Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.

Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

1. If not immediately, soon. This film has the power to be a game changer!
I have watched it twice in todays, posted it to Facebook and will encourage every person I know to watch it. It is just as powerful as Michael Moore's Capitalism: A love story.

6. I just watched the trailer... powerful stuff.
I loved the quote by Alice Walker, "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any."

I don't have cable, so I will have to wait for it to be shown elsewhere (Netflix, hopefully).

Thanks for the heads up! :hi:

7. No prob, spread the word.
Although I am sure it will not take long because a substantial amount of footage is from Fox News, I can all but guarantee News Corp will declare war on this film.

20. My thoughts.
It's not quite over but it's close enough. I found it, on the whole, very discouraging and I certainly wouldn't show it to young girls who are already struggling. As a fairly well adjusted adult female I found myself wondering how the hell we could overcome all of this.

I think what it ends up showing is that in most instances (and I hate to use a broad brush but I must) that men are the root of the problem. I say this not because I think men are horrible but there is a problem in how we raise boys to become men. We are still raising them to believe that they are superior to women. This may not be the way YOU personally are raising your child per se but they definitely get that message from TV, video games, the news, their friends, etc. And the way we raise girls to be women is just as bad. We need to stop judging people based on beauty. We need to change the language we use to describe strong women, even jokingly. The segment with Rachel Maddow talking about how much hate mail she receives based solely on her looks was astounding. When Dianne Feinstein talked about how reporters/media talk about women in politics (a male 'states' something but the woman 'complains' about something) is telling of how we view women overall--even if it's subtle.

I don't know how we fix this but like I said above, the way we raise our children, the self-worth bestow on them is key.

And I'd like to state when I say the problem is how we raise boys to men, I'd like to state that if you think about it, it's not fair to them either. They are raised to believe they are superior and then when we try to tell them they aren't it must be confusing/frustrating for them.

13. Where do they get the idea that 65% of women have disordered eating behaviors?
How can the number possibly be that high? When I look around the USA I see a lot of mildly to moderately overweight women.

16. a lot fo the eating disorder CAUSES overweight.
there is an unexpected expectation of a lower weight beyond the norm of the body. throw in the psychological self worth of it, it cause the binging purging, can never manifest to the desired goal. so, a person may starve for days, until they can no longer physically or mentally maintain that starvation and binge, allowing weight to escalate. instead of moderation, no deprivation, and acceptance of self allowing natural weight to just be.

when appearance is wrapped up in worth, this is the result.

a lot of girls use foor for comfort or protection from pain

25. Okay, I'll buy that.
The number 65% still seems to high, but in any case I do see the reasoning behind it.

Case in point: I have a relative who is usually overweight, but she's a "yo-yo dieter" like Oprah. When she gets the motivation to get skinny, she does it quickly. It's much better to maintain a healthy weight, not have extreme fluctuations in weight.

18. I was surprised at the studies showing links
between violent behavior and violence in media. That idea is usually shot down using other studies, and I always had the idea that the other viewpoint, that there is a link, was driven by conventional wisdom rather than conflicting studies.
