White sheets may be bad for your sleep.
Dr. Oz-Approved Sheet Colors Chart

The reason you’re tossing and turning at night might be the color of your bed sheets. Dr. Oz has the guide to the best colors for quality shut-eye.

If you sleep on white sheets, you could be sabotaging your sleep. The whiteness reflects the light, which stops the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep.

Sleep on sheets that are orange, yellow, red and black. Stay away from white as well as blue or green. Use the chart below as a guide.

I need to do something about this as my insomnia is bad. And yes I do have white sheets and really soft ones too. Boo.

35. I resorted to carboard over the windows.
My neighbors would turn their back porch light on, and it would shine right into my bedroom. I can't afford blackout curtains right now, so I just cut up a box and taped it over my window.

14. Seriously, check out sustained release melatonin.
Melatonin is a great sleep aid but tends to wear off in about 4 hours, the "sustained" type is slow release. My middle of the night insomnia is much better now.

I was skeptical, but desperate enough to try anything that would put me to sleep after years of waking up at 3 AM, and being unable to go back to sleep. I think it has melatonin in it.

77. Try a sleep mask. It's pretty effective at keeping you in the dark.
Also, white noise of some sort. In the summer there's a fan and in the winter the humidifier. I also use a white noise machine with the sound of waves on the beach...very rhythmical and soothing...

Or, a comforter. It's not like the light will hit them anyway.

I have white sheets and green sheets. If Dr. Oz wants me to sleep on sheets of another color, he can buy them for me.

He didn't say exactly what others (the apple juice industry) said he said.

Dr. Oz is a legitimate doctor who, at least as far as I know, doesn't take money from corporations to pump up certain products or study results.

He's a pretty good common sense sort of doctor.

He's a good guy. He's genuine. He's not a Dr. Phil. I've watched his shows occasionally, when there was something of particular interest to me. I've never heard him once recommend taking a drug. That's impressive, since doctors are mainly schooled in treating conditions through pharmaceuticals. Dr. Oz, OTOH, is pretty knowledgeable about PREVENTION, nutrition, healthy lifestyle, etc., in addition to the traditional medical knowledge.

61. Actually, no. He rarely recommends taking drugs, advising instead on a healthy
lifestyle. Something that doctors rarely do.

His books stress this. His books give what seems to me fairly complete information about the various bodily functions, as well as how to be healthy, live longer, age well, etc. But they are written in a lay person's language.

Sure, he's on TV now. It won't last. There are only so many topics for a doctor to discuss. And there are ads for the show, like for all shows. But HE doesn't push drugs, like most doctors. Instead, his recommendations are generally for certain kinds of exercise, how long and how often, eating habits, other lifestyle habits, and avoidance of dangerous substances (that is what recently got him into trouble about the apple juice show).

He's one of the good ones. He's not a Dr. Phil, who is pure show business. And has been for some years, even before he was famous. He was in business here in Dallas, TX....he wasn't practicing psychology or psychiatry or whatever his profession is. He was a partner in a business that produced videos for trials and things like that.

Dr. Oz's wife is a semi-famous author, I think, so it was natural for him to start writing books, with an author in the family.

71. He was selecting shadow juries for big trials.
They would look at the information on each juror and come up with a person of the same age and background, 12 or 14 of them, and use their shadow jury to predict what the verdict would be.

That is NOT "producing videos for trials".

It takes some knowledge of psychology to use certain types of people to predict their attitudes and opinions.

I worked at the courthouse in a large city for almost 20 years. Jury selection is a sophisticated process now.

a few seconds when I get into bed. I think he's talking about people who hang out in their bedrooms. I think a lot of people do that. I don't.

Dr. Oz's apple juice show was excellent. Fact: apple juice can legally contain more arsenic than is allowed by our government in tap water. Fact: Some apple juices do in fact contain more arsenic than is allowed in tap water. Fact: Toxins affect children much more than adults because of their small body size.

37. Actually, I Think the Author Isn't Talking About Sleep Per Se
but about 24-hour rhythms which are built around the amount of light reaching the skin. It's like the trick for minimizing jet leg by lighting the skin (or just the back of the knee) according to daylight hours in the new time zone before traveling.

I would be surprised if this were a major effect. As some other posters have suggested, eliminating as much ambient light in the bedroom is probably the most effective way.

39. That may make a difference for people who hang out in their bedrooms...
reading and such, watching TV with the light on, etc. But when I go to bed, I do watch TV, but I'm ready for bed/sleep, and I turn the lights off. I also have a coverlet. I'm lucky in that I go to sleep fairly quickly & sleep like a rock. I only see the color the sheets when I turn the covers down to get in, just for a few seconds, and that's it. I use white sheets most of the time.

These are just the traditional costumes of those who helped drive the Jews from Spain in (wait for it) 1492.

Here is the real deal

As of June 2011, our Gov (soon President?) Perry supported putting the Confederate flag on Texas license plates.

No matter what color my sheets (generally light yellow - with the Eiffel Tower or Fish on them) I have trouble sleeping when I think of where we are headed as a nation.

55. OZ is nutty
When the lights are OUT, the white, blue or green sheets are not reflecting light.

BTW, none of my sheets are those white. LOL

57. I have watched Dr. Oz on daytime TV,
Edited on Sat Oct-22-11 03:56 PM by RebelOne
and some of his remedies and advice on what to eat are a little over the top, If I believed that all the juices and fruits would cure all my ailments, then I wouldn't have room in my refrigerator for all of them. And my medicine cabinet would be packed with all the supplements he recommends.

74. Yep, at it surprises me.
He's supposed to be such a well-respected doctor, but he sure does peddle an awful lot of snake oil and questionable remedies. "The Doctors" are just as bad. And, don't get me started on Dr. Phil... Dr. Oz used to give out nothing but good advice, especially back when he teamed up with Dr. Roisen. I really don't understand what happened to him.

73. I would think that goes for white painted rooms as well.
Edited on Sun Oct-23-11 02:40 PM by Dover
All I can say is that I'm sleeping really really well on persimmon (orange) sheets with walls painted in earthy beige/terracotta accent wall. It just feels peaceful and secure. Never thought about why it feels so much better, but the room used to
be sort of a light sea blue/green. So there ya go.

76. Advertising and Design firms understand color psychology and light
Edited on Sun Oct-23-11 03:09 PM by Dover
Many restaurant chains stick with appetite enhancing colors and many grocery stores also entice the senses with the smell of cinnamon.
If I'm not mistaken these appetite-enhancing colors are 'warm' Fall type colors which makes some sense if our bodies are taking cues from the seasons.
And by extension it also makes sense that Fall season colors would induce better sleep as well. Who knows, it may even be linked physiologically to melatonin release.
There's a long history of studies on how our senses respond to various stimulus. I'm not sure what studies Dr. Oz
is working from, but I'll bet there is plenty of precedent for it.

Not that I know anyone that wears Superman underpants to bed, I'm just saying that it's a good thing.

86. But white sheets are better for thrift.
They can be bleached (whether you use bleach, peroxide, lemon juice, etc) and it's easier to match the color to replace just one piece instead of a full set. Colors may be harder to match, unless you can find replacements dyed in the same batch.

As to black sheets-they always felt hotter to me in the summer.

Of course, if you sleep on white sheets and dream of burning crosses...
