Pete Seeger Marches in Support of Occupy Wall Street
92-year-old singer performed with Arlo Guthrie

By Rolling Stone

October 22, 2011 9:25 AM ET Musician Pete SeegerJoe Kohen/WireImagePete Seeger took to the streets of New York's Upper West Side late Friday night, marching more than 30 blocks from his concert at Symphony Space to Columbus Circle in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The 92-year-old folk singer was joined by his grandson, Tao Rodriguez Seeger, blues musician Guy Davis and composer David Amram on the march. The approximately 1,000 protesters chanted, "We are the 99 percent" and "We are unstoppable, another world is possible," The Associated Press reports.

When the crowd arrived at Columbus Circle, Seeger was joined by fellow folk singer Arlo Guthrie, and they performed a version of "We Shall Overcome" with Amram. At that point, Seeger asked for one of the Occupy Wall Street movement's hallmark mic checks – in which the crowd repeats information to each other without the use of amplified sound – to let the approximately 1,000 protesters know the lyrics. "The words are simple: I could be happy spending my days on the river that flows both way-ay-ays," Seeger told the throng.

During the march, the crowd sang a variety of songs that Seeger either wrote or made popular, along with Woody Guthrie songs and other music associated with the protest era of the 1960s.

7. He might very well be one of the last celebrities from the 1950's still alive
who was an adult at the time when his/her notoriety began.
