Heard Austan Goolsbee make an interesting statement the other morning on TV |
|
Don't remember what show or channel and I am paraphrasing what he said and not quoting him. And I don't remember the exact context either.
But basically he said:
If you ever find yourself down and out and hurting financially about 20% of your fellow citizens won't care one way or the other about your situation. And about the other 80% will be happy about it.
As I said this isn't a quote but I think it is pretty close to what he said.
After going through the experience of being one of the long unemployed think I have to agree with the jest of that statement.

1. Well, SOMEONE must care--a friend, a parent, a sibling, a partner/spouse |

I care.
I love Austan, but I think it's a tad overstated. The gist is probably right though. Aside from friends and family and a circle of sympathetic people who believe everyone should have a chance to work, a lot of people will lord it over you. They think your misfortune must somehow be connected to their luck, so they worry that if you get lucky it might take something away from them.

4. I'm listening to it - He said his grandfather would say "80% of people don't care about your |
|
problems and the other 20% are glad".
