"I guess the world still needs ditch diggers."
That saying has always bugged me. My mom was a cook for a large school,my dad worked his whole adult life on the railroad. Both belonged to unions. They worked hard, got a decent wage, and got a decent pension. Those days of decent wages were thankfully, thankfully still availible before they retired.

Yes,the world needs ditch diggers. It's probably something one of the 1% thought of,belittling them. But Mr.1% pay them an honest wage for an honest days work. Give them a fair pension after a lifetime of this backbreaking labor. That should not be too much to ask.

2. Reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons
Principal Skinner was punishing Nelson Muntz and his thug friends, Kearney and Jimbo, etc.

Skinner: I'm sentencing you to the most humiliating, the most degrading work known to man: JANITORIAL SERVICE!

Groundskeeper Willie: Oh jeez sir, I'm standing right here.

Skinner: Ah, yes.

3. I'm unbelievably uneasy about my future...
I work a $17/hr wage job with ZERO benefits.

I'm 31 now, I work an incredibly physically demanding job; landscape construction.

I'm barely above paycheck to paycheck, I'm definately in no position to afford healthcare or 401(k)/Roth contributions. My only investment is that I 'own' my home...

I'm extremely nervous/anxious about what the future brings for me.

5. There seems to be a huge difference if you dig a ditch on your land
or on the land of someone else.

Shoveling dirt that you don't own isn't freedom.

7. How can you miss the point so completely?
The point is that a person should be able to make a living wage and be afforded decent benefits, no matter their skill set.

10. IMO the "New Information Economy" BS has left people of modest intelligence in the lurch.
In the past such people could get a good job at a factory, now such people are stuck at McJobs.
