Livestreaming: #OccupyChicago Attempts to Hold Grant Park

By: Kevin Gosztola Saturday October 22, 2011 6:53 pm

There were 175 people arrested last weekend in Chicago for attempting to set up tents as part of #OccupyChicago. I’ll be there reporting and livestreaming from Grant Park at 7pm central time (6pm ET) as they attempt to set up a base there once again.

Grant Park officially closes at 11pm, which was the excuse used by Chicago police to arrest protesters last week. #OccupyChicago organizers have indicated they intend to stand their ground once again and I will be there at 11 CT to film any arrests/standoff that may happen.

Livestream from inside the park, which began at midnight CT – “the occupation is not leaving.”

So Rahm: Cops shoving media away, won't let them witness what they're about to do. Not a good sign.

"Why no press? Why no press?"

2. I Was There In '68......
I saw Chicago cops taunting the protesters in Grant Park before the worst violence broke out. The cops were on CTA buses in their riot gear - their heads popping out the bus windows - pounding their billy clubs against the sides of the buses - catcalling out to the protesters (hippies) - just egging them on hoping to incite violence. I was there. I saw this with my own eyes. Fortunately I had the sense to go home and not stay around for that evenings melée.

I hope that the OWS protesters don't fall for this and get lured into a riot. That will be the quickest way to put and end to their cause. These protests need to remain non-violent.

Our generation helped end the Vietnam War. I don't know if this OWS had any effect on our ending things in Iraq but let's hope this group will have some impact on the ending of our current wars and put the Banksters & Wall Street and the top 1% in their places.

4. I don't think there will be violence like there was in 68
Most of the police are not even wearing riot gear. The only helmets I've seen are on mounted officers. In Chicago back in the day, they were helmeted and aggressive with the nightsticks. They wouldn't think of simply using a little pepper spray back then (if they even had such a thing...it was "mace" back then and it didn't work on people who were under the influence of certain drugs) --they wanted to bruise and break, not discomfit.

Also, the limitations of film/video back then only gave us a small slice of what was happening. Today, every other person has a little video capability in their back pocket. It's possible to see what's happening, even if "the media" are pushed to the side. Very different paradigm. Of course, it's still an old-school "sit in" in some regards, only outdoors instead of in the dean's office...and with camping comforts.
