Occupy Oakland shuts streets, defy eviction order

Matthai Kuruvila, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, October 23, 2011

Hundreds of activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement marched Saturday from Oakland City Hall, snaking their way through downtown and around Lake Merritt while they flouted an eviction order.

They closed thoroughfares and freeway ramps, invaded one bank and temporarily shut down another as they spread their message against economic inequality. But after three hours, they returned to City Hall, where they cooked food over open flames, danced and slid back into their tents.

"We're not leaving," said a 30-year-old bartender who identified himself only as Jabar. He has been at the camp almost every day and vowed, "We are not going to just walk away."

Of course, leaving is exactly what city officials had hoped...

Appears to be a news blackout of the Occupy SF on SFGate, no new stories on it since 1/17. Recent news is only about Occupy Oakland. I think the TV stations have small segments on their news. Last I heard/saw was that they had also defied SF Police orders to disband and evacuate the encampment. At least they were offering some sidewalk space for overnighters nearby, but I heard the Occupy SF people were not having it.

I am going to SF this afternoon and will visit and have a look around.

Anyone else notice a news blackout of sorts in their areas on the Occupy protests?

1. Its getting pretty messy in downtown Oakland with rats and sanitary condition deteriorating . As
Liberal as the City of Oakland is, how long will they let this go on? I don't think, eventually, its going to end well for our side.

2. Well, on that "topic," I heard protestors interviews that the story was BS
As they are still there in Oaktown, with apparent numbers still growing, I think they can handle any such "stories."

I think it will end well, in that any perceived "problems," will be resolved by what appear to be very organized participants. Don't look for the people in Oakland to give up so easily. Police/City claims notwithstanding.

I say go there and see for one's self, which is what I intend to do today as well as donate some baked goods.

8. OCCUPYSF
There is absolutely an MSM news blackout in SF. Even the SF Examiner may have 'reported' more frequently than the SF Kronikle. A few of the local TV stations, particularly KTVU Ch2 Oakland seems to have given most coverage from the start. SFBG and to a lesser extent FCJ have been covering.

9. Yup, that's what I'm seeing since middle of last week
How is the reporting concerning other areas of the world today?

Can others here check their local media, especially as it pertains to negative stories disseminated instead of real time reports, etc.

11. Here's a media report: Skyhigh standoff at Occupy San Jose protest
Skyhigh standoff at Occupy San Jose protest

Posted: 8:58 am PDT October 24, 2011Updated: 9:34 am PDT October 24, 2011

SAN JOSE -- A protester with "Occupy San Jose" climbed to the top of a large wall outside City Hall early Monday to protest the continued removal of protesters from the plaza below, according to police and demonstrators said.

The man, identified by another protester as Shaun O'Kelly, climbed up during the night and was still on the wall as of 8 a.m.

Five people were arrested in the plaza for illegal camping around 3:20 a.m. today, San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said. One was cited and released at the scene, and the other four were booked into Santa Clara County Jail, he said...

Occupy San Jose protester Peter Brown said that at least three tents were pitched outside of City Hall when he left on Sunday afternoon. He said that when he returned early this morning, O'Kelly was already on the wall...

And that's it on KTVU's website. Nothing about OccupySF, nothing current or new on Occupy Oakland.
