NYPD tells teachers, “No grading papers in public"
<skip>

Grade-ins have become common in cities across the country as teachers gather in public spaces to do work that usually gets done at home, off the clock and unrecognized: prepping for classes, grading papers and doing the unending paperwork that the school bureaucracies demand.

Since there was no open space in Liberty Square, this group of teachers gathered across the street. A few minutes later two uniformed New York cops arrived on the scene.

“What’s going on.”

“We’re grading papers.”

“Can’t do that here.”

6. I once sat in back of a college professor
grading papers, and cheerfully looked over his shoulder. He was a linguistics professor at the local university, so I couldn't make much sense out of what I was reading. We did fall into conversation and it turned out he knew another friend of mine who was a linguistics professor at a university in a different state.

It was at my kid's gymnastic class that this happened.

and see how many BUSINESS people are sitting with their laptops or reading their business papers. Illegal? In working in NYC for decades I never saw a cop tell them they cannot do this in PUBLIC. But teachers cannot do their work in public?

When my daughter was teaching in the Bronx and rode the subway home to Astoria she did lessons plans and graded papers. She never told me anybody cop on the train told her not to do this. In fact, she sometimes used to go out at lunch break to a park and sit there and do it too.

9. This is really disgusting...
...how the police are making up rules.

This is a violation of our rights. There is no law against grading papers
while sitting in a public area. WTH?

What if I would have been sitting in this public area, doing a bit of writing
for a client. Is that illegal?

We have got to fight these violations of our rights. We have to be willing
to stick up for our rights. Otherwise, I guess--we have no rights!

What happened to these teachers and also to Naiomi Wolf--really is frightening.

In my opinion, these officers could be--and should be--sued.

:wtf:

Are they scared of some highlighter/red pen black market?

What the hell makes NYPD officers such little scaredy pants?

Sounds like lately, they are afraid of their own shadows...

I imagine for a teacher, on a nice day, it's enjoyable to be in a crowd doing the drudge work of grading papers. But maybe they don't want any propaganda showing how overworked American teachers are?
