What would MLK say to Obama?
Especially regarding labor issues, but on war and justice too.

2. I would hope it was Obama who was doing the asking
I guess I have a dream too! Obama would not be there without Dr. King. Yet Obama betrays much of what Dr. King fought for in terms of peace, labor, protection of the powerless, and economic fairness.

3. Obama's questions might would have to go through Party professional
advisors, think tanks, and handlers first.

8. Dr. King was a minister. President Obama is a president. I would
expect that Dr. King would appreciate the difference.

That those roles were reversed. THEN there would be hope of change.

4. He would tell him ...
... to stop acting like a corporatist, to fire all of his Wall Street insider cronies and replace them with advisers who have a connection to laboring people, and he would tell him to get the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

In other words, he would tell him to stop governing so much like a Repuglican.

10. Don't think so.
Dr. King would never confuse Barack Obama with a Republican. Never.

19. MLK already said a lot of things.
We don't need to invent new ones for him.

Seriously, I hate this kind of thing just as much as the "MLK would vote republican today" crowd. It's crass.

20. I think he would repeat himself
"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."

Edited on Mon Jan-17-11 06:21 PM by Marr
Obama doesn't consult with advocates for labor or the poor. He's much more interested in "working with" the business community.

28. If MLK didn't have the weight of his history that would absolutely be the case
That's 100% true. He wouldn't be allowed to even enter the game today. He'd have to start at square one - all things equal. But he had an opposition party to appeal to back then. We don't.

26. All he has to do is read the book he wrote the year before he died.
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."

27. Youtube: Dr. Cornel West- "Barack Obama Is NOT The Fulfillment Of Martin Luther King's Dream!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTLrNVg6UQs

Cornel Ronald West (born June 2, 1953) is an American philosopher, author, critic, actor, civil rights activist and prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America. West is the Class of 1943 University Professor at Princeton University, where he teaches in the Center for African American Studies and in the Department of Religion. West is known for his combination of political and moral insight and criticism and his contribution to the post-1960s civil rights movement. The bulk of his work focuses on the role of race, gender, and class in American society and the means by which people act and react to their “radical conditionedness." West draws intellectual contributions from such diverse traditions as the African American Baptist Church, pragmatism and transcendentalism.<1>

29. MLK said that poverty wages are a CRIME
He spoke before on behalf of the sanitation workers. He spoke of dignity, that we are men, we are god's children.

MLK just wanted to do god's will. Obama serves the will of corporatists who HATE labor with venom.

Obama is a FOOL if he thinks they will ever allow him in that house.
Obama is squarely on the opposite side of this argument.
Obama has to let go and let god, cuz it sure is a mess with his will in control.
