Millionaire-Defender Gov. Cuomo Fails To Evict Occupy Albany After District Attorney Refuses To Prosecute Them
By Zaid Jilani on Oct 24, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Andrew Cuomo was rebuked by Albany's mayor and the district attorney.

Last week, 99 Percenters in descended on Albany, New York, close to the state capitol in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. Thus, “Occupy Albany” was born. One of the major demands that Occupy Albany and other New York 99 Percenters have been making is for Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) to drop his opposition to extending the millionaire’s tax.

The New York Post notes that Cuomo, wary of the fact that three-quarters of New Yorkers support the millionaire’s tax tried to shut down Occupy Albany over the weekend. He put pressure on Mayor Jerry Jennings to enforce an ordinance closing parks at 11 p.m. But the mayor resisted and district attorney David Soares told the city he would not prosecute any of the protesters:

****Gov. Cuomo suffered a rare political defeat over the weekend as he tried but failed to get Albany’s Democratic mayor to do something Mayor Bloomberg won’t do: shut down the local Occupy Wall Street demonstration. <...> Albany’s leftist-oriented and highly political district attorney, David Soares, told city officials he wouldn’t prosecute demonstrators who were arrested by Albany police. “My understanding is he spoke to the Albany police and told them he wouldn’t prosecute,’’ said Jennings.

“We’re just getting this off the ground,” said Occupy Albany protester Dave Sickler. “These things take time. Right now, we’re just getting people here and figuring out what we’re going to do.” Thanks to Jennings and Soares, the protesters will get a chance to practice their First Amendment rights without being shut down.

2. K&R

The revolution will not be shown on television. Nothing will be on television... or if anything is, no one will notice.

The revolution will not provide you with political clout, a luxury car or designer antidepressants. It will render such things superfluous.

The revolution will not help you build muscle mass or tone your flabby thighs. It will make it possible for you to feel beautiful in your body, not because of it.

The revolution will not put the right people in control of the government or impose limits on the conduct of corporations. It will abolish control, government, limits, corporations.

The revolution will not give you superhuman powers of creativity, audacity, or conflict resolution. It will push aside the obstacles that inhibit you from exercising the power you already have.

The revolution will not put an end to violence, struggle or interpersonal strife. It will offer you the chance to right for your own interests, for once, and let the chips fall where they may.

The revolution will not just put all genders, ethnicities, and nationalities on equal footing - it will dissolve the borders that distinguish them.

The revolution will not make you self-sufficient. It will equip you to take care of others, and others to take care of you.

The revolution will not provide you with the man or woman of your dreams. It will bring out the unique beauty of the ones already around you.

The revolution might not always feed or house or heal you, but hunger and thirst and cold and even sickness will trouble you a lot less.

The revolution will not mean you finally get what you deserve. It will give you treasures no one could ever deserve, just as it will sometimes hurt with a pain nothing in your life has warranted.

The revolution will not be simple or clean or easy. It will help you to find meaning in difficult things, to be courageous in facing complexities and contradictions, to get your hands dirty and like it.

The revolution is not going to happen tomorrow -- it's never going to happen. It's taking place right now. It is an alternate universe that runs parallel to this one, waiting for you to switch sides.

8. Thanks, HE is part of the problem. All Wall Street
Candidates in the next election should be challenged to refuse Corporate funding and either start working for the people, or be challenged by a true, non-Wall Street funded candidate. I think the time is right now for people who normally didn't have a chance against Corporate Funded Candidates to finally have a chance to get elected.

Bloomberg, Cuomo, so sad to see them on the wrong side of history.

because of NYers here @ DU commenting on it. If I didn't know its reputation, that little dig would still start fluttering like a neon sign gone bad.

Everyone knows that every dollar for the defense would be a dollar less for the Democratic party. Registered democrats put the protestors over party.

15. will anyone get David Soare's back? He will get a pounding on RW radio and especially in the Albany
area it will translate into a variety of attacks from dittoheads and teabaggers who take their orders from the local radio blowhards.

as usual, however, there will probably be no reaction from the left because it has no clue it's going on.

the result, the attacks on soares, will make a difference- his office staff and he will feel it and local politicians will call for his resignation. meanwhile the local blowhards (and maybe national) will be getting koch bros funded paid think tank callers to help prompt the radio attack on soares. and then this weekend the same stations will do pro and university sports.

and there is NO organized opposition to the right's best weapon, and it will continue to minimize and slow any real reform that will come from OWS.

17. If you lived in Albany or nearby, you would be castigated for
making such untrue statements. Albany has always been a Democratic stronghold, and it has multiple colleges and several universities in the immediate area. We are thoroughly liberal and progressive here. You have no idea what you're saying, unless you're just lying. It is all false. How many Republicans do you see getting elected here, or anywhere in NYS? The only way Andrew Cuomo got in was because many people loved his father and he ran against Paladino, the super wingnut. Too bad Cuomo the younger is not more like his father. Mario Cuomo has integrity. Andrew Cuomo, not so much.

18. if you haven't heard the local talkers on the subject, how would you know?
how much political radio in the area? how many of those are progressive. even in your liberal area i'll bet the RW gers dominate. and i guarantee those local RW talkers, whether they'r e in albany or in the signal area, all got the talking points to attack soares. and very few people are going to defend him in that medium.

19. I live in the Capitol District, so
I actually do know what I'm talking about. I've lived here my entire life. Don't try to CYA by changing your theme now. You obviously don't live any where near here, do you? David Soares is very popular. And, we don't care what right wing loons and idiots think or say. Most people here are trying to advance our cause and not paying attention to the stupid and selfish. There are people here who listen to Rush, et al., but you can't fix stupid, can you? We just let them babble on in their own little world. We are far away from Arizona and Alabama. Why try to pretend you know so much about something you obviously don't. You were speculating and you got busted. Man up and admit it.

21.  "their little world" dominates media and politics in the US because progressives, liberals ignore
radio. it is as if there's a guy on a soapbox at the other end of your street calling you a liar and traitor and thief all day and if no one ever gets in his face your neighbors might start believing him.

it is the only medium capable of the unchallenged repetition needed to get us to this point in history, going backwards the last 20 years, an alternate reality in which single payer is unacceptable, torture and stealing elections and the current field of GOP candidates and global warming denial is acceptable, and the 'left' sits around while 1000 radio stations take free pot shots all day at the politicians whose backs they promised to get.

having a progressive community around him is good to hear, but i'll bet if you listen to the political talk radio in your area it will overwhelmingly be calling for soares to get thrown out along with the 'urine soaked hippies' occupying albany. if you think that is inconsequential you'd be wrong. if it doesn't make a difference,

but progressives ignoring that 'little world' because it hurts their heads to listen to it while it kicks their internet ass has been the biggest blunder in political history, considering the time lost on global warming. while we let the 1% change the rules and turn that little world's well misinformed constituents into 'popular' movement to enable whatever they want, nearly cause the country to default, and obstruct just about everything progressives want.

22. PS the 'left' cannot say it is getting progressives' backs if it ignores the radio and the
attacks coming from those giant community megaphones constantly.

individuals are doing fantastic work and supporting progressives but as long as there is NO organized opposition to the organized think tank coordinated attacks and it is in fact almost completely ignored except for occasional complaints of limbaugh and beck racism or fascism, the 'left' is not getting obama's or their reps backs, or any progressives sticking their necks out.
