1. So Anonymous seeks to censor those with whom it disagrees.
That is the road to tyranny. I doubt that they will have much success. In the process they will piss off a lot of ordinary folks who won't like someone else deciding what they can and can't watch.

They make no attempt to shut down other media with whom they disagree. They have to right to choose who may or may not speak on their network.

34. They don't. They are not required to air any particular view.
But they don't attempt to shut down youtube or other avenues such as DU.

Let us suppose that I have a soapbox. I then have the right to control who gets to use my soapbox because it is MY soapbox. If I don't let you use it I have not censored you as you are free to get your own soapbox. But if I attempt to destroy your soapbox, or stop you from getting on it, then I have censored you because I have interfered with your rights.

Even FOX has rights. If you restrict rights to only those with whom you agree then one day you will find that you don't have any rights.

FOX is under no obligation to air any particular video or promote any viewpoint. They have not tried to block you from seeing that video you linked to.

46. So all the harm they've done and will continue to do for their owner$ is okay?
I get your stance, "don't censor the censors". I just cannot possibly agree as they only cause harm, they are a Limbaugh on a smaller scale. Your argument is sophistry. People and the country are suffering because of them. If your child were being beaten up at school every day you'd do something, you wouldn't declaim "don't censor the bullies". That is not a request for further comment, I get it, you are fixed in this.

50. If you gain the power to shot down conservative organizations...
...you will someday find that power used against you, not because you will be a conservative but because at some point you will disagree with the powers who decide what can be said.

The way to battle FOX news is to be better at presenting your side of the debate. If your side is losing to the other side it is because you aren't communicating well enough to the public, or the public is simply rejecting you.

Nobody is forcing the public to watch FOX. They are making that choice on their own. By what power do you claim the authority to tell the public that they can't watch FOX if they want to?

I applaud this action. This is a war, and Fox news is the equivalent of Joseph Goebbels, Nazi truth minister, in their propaganda machine.

I would have approved of attacks against Goebbels various media outlets too if I had been around at the time.

The idea of free speech is that different ideas can speak while the listener can listen to whatever they want to and decide for themselves if it is propaganda. Anon is claiming the authority to make that decision for the general public and deny them their right to listen to whomever they want to. That is what dictators do.

Anon is threatening to use force to stop FOX. That Anon isn't a part of government makes what they are doing even more illegitmate. Would you approve of demonstrators going into a conservative newspaper and smashing the presses? It is the same thing. FOX has a right to publish their views. Anon does not have a right to stop them. Anon does have a right to publish their counter view on their own media outlets.

The only way to defend our rights is to also defend the rights of those with whom we disagree.

Both RW & LW agree on that. However if our society were that of ancient Sparta then we would find kiddie-porn acceptable. Our society has pretty much agreed that political speech should be free of censorship. By what right does Anon claim the authority to dictate to the public what political positions they can listen to? If you strip your political opponents of their rights, which is what you want to do, you will eventually find you have lost your own rights.

Anonymous simply brings such things to the attention of the world. Fox News has not been taken out. They've simply been hacked temporarily.

Is it the right of an entity, whether it's Fox News or your next door neighbor to spread blind raging hatred based on nothing more than lies and their agenda towards you because you post on DU? Would you think maybe your rights are being trampled while they can fall back on the Constitution to protect them?

But I'm probably wrong. I'm sure you would have their back no matter how much they ruined your life.

62. If there were still regulations on the books to keep the news media truly "balanced..."
I would agree with you 100%.

However, since what we have in Fox "News" is a propaganda outlet which lies and distorts at will and ad nauseam, with no repercussions from the FCC or otherwise, I'm going to have to say that anybody with the cojones to throw some monkey wrenches into their works has my blessing.

The people most certainly do have a right to watch whatever they want. But at the same time, Fox "News" is committing its own "tyranny" on a daily basis with no fear of rebuke. If the government is so neutered that it can no longer maintain a semblance of truth in reporting, then by all means let groups like Anonymous make it far more expensive for the liars, obfuscators and purveryors of distorted "news" to operate.

And as far as those pissed off ordinary folks, it's a pretty safe bet that nearly all of them are a lost cause anyway if they allow their world views and outlooks to be defined by Fox "News." They can go whine about it at their next Teabagging balls-on-chin rally.

66. FOX is almost entirely cable, satellite, or internet now.
So the FCC would have little effect on them.

Part of having free speech is the freedom to tell their version of events. You may call it lies, but to them it is truth. You would have the FCC (government) to determine an official version of the truth that must be adhered to by all. How quickly do you think that power would be abused?

The way to counter FOX is to put your own version of events before the public. If they still decide to log onto FOX then you need to do a better job of communicating.

Fox is clearly not doing what they do out of well-meaning but misguided altruism.

Free speech does guarantee individuals the right to express whatever they may choose, but it should never allow a media corporation to deliberately lie and slant issues to serve the interests of other corporations.

It's always hard to tell, because *anyone* can speak for Anonymous -- but the core members seem to have sworn off DDOS attacks since it got a lot of low-level participants arrested.

And for whatever it's worth, here are some tweets posted a couple of hours ago by one of the more knowledgeable Anonymous twitter accounts:

http://twitter.com/#!/AnonyOps/statuses/128563313511645184

The internet tells me anons are attacking fox news. bit.ly/rMxr7d though, I'm not sure what taking down their website will achieve.

Everyone knows people who watch Fox News can't read. Taking down their website is useless.

http://twitter.com/#!/AnonyOps/statuses/128563610518687745

....You'd get better mileage out of shutting down Fox's TV stations. Just saying.

(Not that I condone that, either)

23. Thanks to FOX, Acorn was shut down
and Planned Parenthood was almost shut down, so I think they and all their lies are a legitimate target.
They are not legitimate news. I don't think lies that are slanderous and destructive should be protected.

If Foxnews was a legitimate news organization, I would care. Since all they do is fabricate propaganda aimed at getting Obama kicked out of office...I agree with Anon!

30. They should post facts instead of taking it down.
I don't know if they can do that or maybe they can cause a page to pop up and reveal facts vs lies. Something to that effect.

I am aware of several sites that mock DU & some of our members, but that isn't harassment.

53. What does Anon thin will happen when they tell tens of millions of folks...
..."We won't let you watch FOX. We, the all-wise Anonymous have determined that FOX news if bad for you and for your own good we are stopping you from watching."? Just how well do you think most folks will take to such a stance? How many hearts and minds do you think that will win? It will be a golden gift to the RW who will have an easy time painting Anon as wannabe LW dictators-of-the-proletariat.

54.  take the media back.
Fox is the worst offender and the vengeance should properly begin there.

the media is in large part responsible for the sad state of affairs as they are - they are not doing their jobs of properly informing the public, but of serving the people that own them. And those people, the 1%ers couldn't give a fuck about the rest of us. Time for a change.

And you didn't answer the guestion. What will those tens of millions of people do when you tell them that they can't watch what they want to watch?

and those tens of millions without Fox might grow a couple brain cells being without Fox's ill influence in disinformation.

59. So you want to be a dictator.
You want to tell tens of millions of people what they can and can't watch. That is a real good way to get them very pissed off at you. Do you really think that such an action will get them to support your causes?

I am very easy to understand. I oppose all censorship. Anon is attempting to use force to compel people to watch only Anon approved news and that is censorship and is wrong.

Would you approve of going to a conservative newspaper and smashing the press? There is no difference. It is an attempt to use force to stop the publication of ideas that you don't like.

Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 11:16 PM by GreenStormCloud
The only way to defend my rights is to defend their rights too. So many here want to have rights only for those with whom they politically agree and to strip the other side of rights.

BTW - FOX isn't on the airwaves. They are cable, satellite, and internet, not broadcast.

65. Bill O’Reilly Admits That Fox News Is Waging A War Against Occupy Wall Street
Bill O’Reilly Admits That Fox News Is Waging A War Against Occupy Wall Street
October 24, 2011By Jason Easley2diggsdiggShare291

By trying to defend the Fox News smear campaign against Occupy Wall Street as self-defense, Bill O’Reilly accidentally admitted that Fox is waging war on the 99%.

Fox News isn’t just smearing the left when they attack Occupy Wall Street. They are insulting the left, right, and middle. In their fantasy, Occupy Wall Street is only a movement of the left, but the reality is that there are people of all shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, ages, and political beliefs taking part in these protests, and Fox News has declared them all to be the enemy.

Anonymous has called Fox News a propaganda organization, and vowed to shut them down, but FNC is more than propaganda. Fox News is the voice of the one percent. They are the mainstream media troops who are trying to silence the 99%. One percenters like Bill O’Reilly are afraid of Occupy Wall Street, so they are using all their power to try to destroy it.

Occupy Wall Street is not only a threat to Wall Street. It is also a threat to media giants who make their money by feeding the American people an anesthetic of misinformation and fear. News Corp is the most powerful media company in the world, but they are being defeated because the 99% has had enough.
