2. Hard to say. Or, for that matter, if it actually did. |
|
The statistics behind polling are variable, and tend to produce "outliers" every so often even when consistently using the same methods. To achieve anything approaching certainty, you have to look at trends and polling numbers in the aggregate. When you have a substantial change without a specific reason, it may be an outlier.

6. Define the words "liberal" and "approval" please, in the context of this poll. |
|
If you can, which I'm assuming you can't, which makes the number meaningless.

These polls get posted and hyped whenever they're published, but nobody seems to know how a "liberal" is selected or what "approve" really means. But it seems to please some folks that they think they can shove this "news" out there as "proof" of something or other. Usually what I've noticed is that it's supposed to shut up everyone who has the temerity to notice that the Obama administration isn't all that and a bag of chips, liberal values-wise.

18. It's pretty obvious, if you're not trying to spin every story into bad news for Obama. |
|
Liberal is based on self identification. Approval is kind of a straightforward word: do you or do you not approve of the job the President is doing.
Some people just don't want to face up to the fact that the angry internet crowd is not at all representative of liberal Democrats, so they try to spin it that the poll doesn't really represent liberals, or that they don't REALLY approve of Obama.

Whatever you say. So, if, for example, Heath Shuler wants to identify himself as a "liberal" Democrat, the pollster doesn't inquire too closely into that. And if, say, John Bolten "approves" of Obama because of the way he and his military are indiscriminately snuffing people in other countries with drone missile strikes, then it's all good as long as the numbers please some other people.

22. In other words, to justify your opinion you believe there's a massive conspiracy to rig Gallup polls |
|
Including thousands upon thousands of people conspiring, just on the off chance they're randomly called by Gallup, to claim that they're liberal Democrats in order to throw off one poll number on Gallup. Even though every single poll, everywhere, consistently shows that the more liberal one is, the more likely you are to approve of Obama's job performance, and the more conservative you are the more likely you are to disapprove.
Because according to you, that massive ground-up conspiracy theory is simpler than than the possibility that it's your opinions that represent a small minority, and that you are not the arbiter of how all liberals everywhere think and feel.

24. Gee, I said all that? |
|
And here I thought I was just calling this poll a meaningless repetitive exercise in self-congratulation for folks who don't want to inquire too closely into what constitutes "liberal" "approval" of the Obama administration.
But those approval numbers have gone down again, but that's apparently what doesn't mean anything.

31. In what universe would Heath Shuler even think about identifying himself as a liberal? |
|
I don't know if you're aware, but the word "liberal" has had mostly negative connotations associated with it in American politics, since the 1980's.
Odds are more actual liberals are going to identify themselves to a pollster as moderates rather than moderates identifying themselves as liberals.
