Perkins: The President Must Be Christian
Perkins: The President Must Be Christian
"Texas pastor Robert Jeffress created a firestorm when he declared at the Values Voter Summit he was voting for Rick Perry because he was a Christian. His rational; all else being equal a Christian leader is to be preferred over a non-Christian. I whole heartedly agree. So did the first justice of the Supreme Court John Jay who said it was in the 'interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.'

"Many so-called journalists have gone apoplectic claiming such a bigoted position violates article 6 of the Constitution, how absurd. The article reads, 'Congress may not require religious tests for an office.' The Constitution restricts what the government can require, not what individuals can consider. If voters can consider a candidate's party and that party's platform, they can consider a candidate’s religion and the tenets of that faith. We should prefer mature, qualified Christians for public office over those who reject the orthodox teachings of scripture." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, taking a thinly-veiled shot at Mitt Romney.

1. A citizen can vote on the basis of a candidate's hair-style. That's our right.

2. And they have...
I remember people at work telling me they were voting for so and so because he was handsome.

Yep, great quality to have in an elected official.

3. I won't vote for anyone who believes that "we are in the end times".
Don't want those people anywhere near the nuclear launch codes.

4. there should be a religious test for office
and if the candidate believes in a god or gods he/she should be immediately disqualified.

6. John Jay was an ass...
if he talked about "our rulers". I don't consider anyone in government, local, state or federal level my "rulers". They are supposed to be our public servants but of course we know that is only true if you are a monied interest. But my "ruler"? I don't think so.

9. It's attributed to Martin Luther, and has been cited here before...
"Frequently attributed to Luther himself: It is better to be governed by a smart Turk (i.e., Muslim) than a stupid Christian. (I am told that Luther in fact never made that specific comment, but he did say things much to the same effect.) "

10. Why shouldn't he vote for people who agree with him about things? I do?
I think that he's wrong, but I think that he's wrong on a specific level - "Christian presidents are preferable to non-Christian ones" - rather than on a generic level - "Taking account of a candidate's religion when deciding how to vote".

11. Thank goodness that people like
Pastor Robert Jeffress has no real say or influence in this matter. Hopefully the response back will be simple.
STFU.

12. Parry...A New Gift That Keeps On Giving...
Perkins is one of Goodhair's hired guns who are lobbing stinkbombs all over the rushpublican primary that are playing to the basest dog whistles of the rushpublican's great unhinged. It's not only a shot at Romney being from the LDS Church but also a veiled one at Frothy Rectorum and his Catholicism or anyone else who isn't the "right" christian according to Perkins or Jefress or whomever is the attack dog that day.

The endgame here is South Carolina. If Parry is to remain a viable candidate he needs a win early on and his best shot it South Carolina...the place where Gramps McCain's black baby doomed his candidacy in '00 and Romney's Mormonism was a big deal in '08 and is sure to be again in '12. Of course the corporate media will eat this stuff with a spoon as its a third rail issue and this works to spread Perkins and Parry's (the A is for Asshole) bile.

He's not the only "surrogate" stirring up the shit...and expect more as Parry's desperation grows...
