That's a First: Republicans Tape It Gets Better Video

After more than a year and hundreds of videos later, the first Republican lawmakers have recorded an It Gets Better video.

Three Republican members of the New Jersey congressional delegation joined seven Democrats, including the state's two senators, in offering their support to gay youth while also calling today for policy change that would prevent antigay bullying.

The three GOP members are Reps. Leonard Lance, Frank LoBiondo, and Jon Runyan.

"No one should ever be bullied," said Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who has sponsored an anti-discrimination bill in Congress named after Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers student who killed himself in 2010 after being secretly recorded in a sexual encounter that was posted on the Internet. The law would require any university receiving federal funding to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

3. Good for them -- good people. I still think they're in the
minority of Republicans who would do that, though (gutsy!), so I think hell will still be toasty for a time. :)

12. I kinda think that Governor Christie would come down against bullying.
In his own, odd way, I think he gives NJ GOP the stones to go their own way on occasion.

7. A lot of registered Republicans know they are being lumped in with the fringe tea party kooks
I think we'll see a lot more Republicans trying to reclaim the center.

8. At the state level, in some areas,
it is possible to still find old school republicans. The ones you can talk to and who have empathy.

I think the decent thing to do would be to encourage a continuance of this behavior because you know that they will be taking heat from the radical right on this.

11. My,my, my. The conscience of a conservative, times three. Good for them.
I'm surprised and pleased. Maybe this is the start of a slow tip towards sanity.

Eons ago, Republicans were not horrible. For a time there, well before the "southern strategy," they were on the right side of voting rights, opposed to segregation, and, despite their penchant for bootstraps, not "awful."

Maybe in sixty years, they'll be "not awful" once more. I won't be here to see it, unless medicine finds the fountain of youth!
