4. That's how it goes
Violence in response to a peaceful protest draws more support for the protest.

I was thinking about it the other day - I was watching an interview with Jibril, a member of Libya's TNC. He said that the Gaddafi regime's mistake was killing the protesters. He actually said that the thinking was "Shoot a few of them and the rest will go home."

I'm fairly sure I heard about some Republican somewhere referencing the occupy movement and saying that a car should be driven into the camps, that if you ran over a few of them the rest would go home.

It seems to be a definite cognitive split between normal people and people who are in positions of power. I know there are large numbers of psychopaths in power, so maybe that explains part of it. But yeah - they don't get how real humans work. Like a RIAA executive said that his goal was to make people too scared to download illegal songs. Any normal human could have told him that the more insanely restrictive you are, the more pushback you're going to get and the more people will download songs illegally just to spite you.

The whole violence equals more people showing up at the next protest thing has been documented so often that I wonder why no one in power has ever learned from it. Why they keep repeating history, making the same mistakes over and over. Perhaps that is another part of the baseline cognitive difference between the 1% and the 99%. They are unable to learn.
