It wasn't merely pat robertson saying - "hey, tone it down, don't think like that anymore."

It was pat robertson saying - "JUST DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT! Go ahead and think whatever you want, and believe whatever you want, but for Heaven's sake, DON'T SHOW YOUR HAND! If the voters know what you really wanna do, they'll run screaming into the night! Then you won't get elected to DO all those things that you and I believe in! IN OTHER WORDS: You have to SNEAK!"

He was calling for his minions to go stealth. To SOUND nice and even-handed and moderate and middle-of-the-road - TO GET VOTED IN.

Funny how anyone else who reported on this or commented on it just resolutely came up short. "Oh LOOK! These nuts are too much even for pat robertson!!! Even HE is telling them to back off!" Yeah. Further proof that they just don't get it.
