Exclusive: Democrats seek up to $3 trillion budget savings

By Richard Cowan and Donna Smith

WASHINGTON | Wed Oct 26, 2011 1:25pm EDT

(Reuters) - Democrats are proposing up to $3 trillion in measures to slash the U.S. budget deficit, including revenue increases and significant cuts to the Medicare health insurance program for the elderly.

The plan was unveiled on Tuesday at a closed-door meeting of a 12-member congressional panel -- the so-called "super committee" that is assigned the task of finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years, congressional aides told Reuters.

3. 400 billion in Medicare cuts. Stabbed in the back.
"It also seeks around $400 billion in Medicare savings, with half coming in benefit cuts and the other half in cuts to healthcare providers."

5. What a surprise - super pacs of secret super .committee members are bulging.
K Street money flowing into deficit panel
By Alexander Bolton - 10/18/11 05:30 AM ET

Members of the deficit-reduction supercommittee have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from special-interest groups, including a significant chunk from healthcare interests that want the panel to fail.

Healthcare political action committees gave more to the deficit panel members than political action committees (PACs) representing energy, defense and agriculture interests, which could also be under the knife, according to fundraising reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

6. Ummmm, why isn't someone proposing more defense cuts?

...instead of trying to start yet another war, this time with Iran? Is supporting the Oil industry that important?

10. Maybe it is just me, but I think the Obama administration squandered the perfect opportunity ...
to get behind a national HC system. Some may say he did not campaign on that, but does that really matter? He campaigned on Medicare negotiating drug prices like the VA does, but quickly dropped that in his deal with Billy Tauzin. Why not change your campaign promise on a national HC plan for all funded by taxes.

As soon as SP advocates were blocked from discussions, I was sure we would hear about cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Especially since he said before even occupying the WH that we needed to control the deficit and entitlements would play a large role.

:(
