3.10pm: Scott Olsen is in a "critical condition", in Highland hospital, a spokesman for the hospital has just confirmed to me. (We already knew he was there from the accounts below, but this is the first official confirmation).

2.24pm: I've just spoken to Keith Shannon, roommate of Scott Olsen, the Iraq veteran who is in hospital after apparently having been hit in the head by a police projectile.

Shannon said doctors told him Olsen has a "skull fracture and swelling of the brain". A neurosurgeon will assess Olsen later today to determine whether he needs surgery, Shannon said.

- snip -

Shannon said Olsen was hit in the head by a tear gas canister or smoke canister shot by a police officer. He said Olsen had a curved scar on his forehead consistent with a canister

Huh. This line of argument sounds even stupider than when I first heard it in April. I wouldn't have thought that possible, but the truth is undeniable.

Hop the turnstile to avoid paying their fares.

Really awful town. High crime rates, much oppression. Currently I don't think that the City of Oakland has a Police Chief, as the current one resigned about a week ago. He said there were eleven agency officials he had to answer for, and he couldn't do his job on account of that.

It took TPTB some 6 years of anti-war protests before they killed the innocent at Kent State and Jackson State. Here it may have only taken them a month.

Police Turn Oakland Into War Zone
By Allison Kilkenny

(Updated 4:24 p.m. ET)

Incredible footage emerged from downtown Oakland last night - not of basic law enforcement efforts to maintain public "health and safety" as the police have been claiming - but of a war zone in which police shot tear gas, bean bags, wooden dowels, flash grenades, and rubber bullets at protesters.

Rather than using the weaponry once in a final effort to subdue the crowd, officers reportedly used them over and over again in what @OccupyOakland describes as a "relentless" assault on the thousands of activists gathered near City Hall.

"The city remains committed to respecting free speech as well as maintaining the city's responsibility to protect public health and safety," Oakland police said in a statement Tuesday.

The "safety" concerns are the usual complaints levelled at the Occupy movements: sanitation issues, improper food storage, graffiti, litter, and vandalism, although OPD added accusations of fighting, assaults, and "threatening/intimidating behavior." Yes, you read that correctly. OPD is accusing the protesters of using "threatening/intimidating behavior."...................

59. That is not far-fetched at all. That exact scenerio is what happened at the
G20 meeting in Toronto. The first day a handful of anarchists were allowed free rein burning cars, looting, breaking windows while police stood back, hte next day hundreds were kettled and arrested. Allowing a few anarchists to riot was part of Harper's plan.

62. Not sure
"handful of anarchists were allowed"

If they were truly allowed free rein, it's 90+% likely they were agents provocateurs. If they really gave free rein to ordinary people, that are mad enough to burn cars, TPTB are risking going over a Tipping Point. TPTB hate uncertainty at that level.

plate glass windows and loot. I was just feet away from them. Although they bandannas over their mouths they did seem rather somewhat too clean cut and unperturbed to be anarchists. I was figuring spoiled rich kids posing as anarchists but perhaps they were paid. I called a police station to ask why there were absolutely no police anwhere on Toronto's main street and just yards away from police hdqts, the srgt I spoke to told me police were told to not interfere so their hands were tied.

I might have it bookmarked - but I've got thousands so it' be hard to find it right away :-) - that somebody found a signal that the agents provocateurs were using to identify each other; a certain color scarf or something like that.

An Iraq war veteran from Wisconsin was critically injured Tuesday night while at a protest in Oakland, California, one of the many demonstrations taking place around the country inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Scott Olsen, originally from Onalaska, Wis., is in critical condition at an Oakland hospital, said Josh Shepherd, a member of Veterans for Peace Chapter 69.

"There's bleeding on the brain, he had a seizure when he arrived at the hospital," Shepherd told the State Journal.....................

57. during the seattle WTO protests
where unions, nuns, families with children protested, the cops shot rubber bullets, indiscriminately at all. Rubber bullets just don't hurt, they injure. One doctor who had been shot, had a shattered jaw.

Friend who went was sick for days from the tear gas. I believe the police chief afterwards, resigned.

51. As much as you want to and I do too, this is the last thing any of us should do
The violence must all come from the powers that be and their henchmen. None returned, no matter how deserved. We fight back, we lose. We stand peacefully and we will win. It will take time and this isn't the first or last violence we'll have to endure. In the end, though, the powers that be will be the ones who didn't fight but just stood with peaceful determination.

49. I thought the police in DC were good at the Anti-war protests I atended
They seemed friendly, courteous and professional. I only saw one incident and some "pro-war" demonstrators attacked a kid taking pictures and the police broke up the fight and were going to arrest all of them but when everyone told the police the poor kid was the one attacked they listened and let him go. I always assumed they would better at this then any other city. Even when it cam time for arrests at the capitol they were very civil and it was all pretty order'y Those who wanted to get arrested hopped over the barricade then they picked up the "dead" IVAW soldiers and off they went to be processed for blocking the walkways.

Be good quiet little serfs, obey your masters and you might get a crust of bread. Disobey in any way and you are dead.

I'm a huge pacifist, have always been very down on guns, but have to tell you I'm reconsidering the need for one or more of these. When chaos descends, and it looks to be coming, these could be helpful in keeping my family alive. I say that and get the shivers, because this is the last thing I want - but it is coming anyway. The 1% will have their way and we, the 99%, are very expendable.

63. Scott Olsen is originally from Onalaska, WI-part of the LaCrosse metro area.
His mother still lives there, local tv reported she was on her way to Oakland. Two tours as a United States Marine Corps member in Iraq, part of a Veterans Against War/Iraq Veterans Against War contingent participating in democracy in Oakland. Looks like a deliberate, and close-up head shot (cannister, baton, beanbag) by a hotdog OPD renegade.
