New TV ad rips Jean Quan: “Stop the police brutality”

The national heat continues to pour in on Oakland Mayor Jean Quan for her administration’s tear-gas-firing reaction to the Occupy Oakland demonstrations. First, Current TV’s Keith Olbermann called on her to resign. Then Jon Stewart mocked her.

And throughout Friday, the liberal online hub MoveOn.org will begin airing a minute-long ad on ABC, NBC and CBS in the Bay Area ripping Oakland’s use of tear gas Tuesday to disperse the Occupiers.

“Mayor Quan,” the ad’s narrator says over the image of a smoke-filled Frank Ogawa Plaza “is this your city? Is this how we treat free speech in the United States of America?”

Over images of an injured demonstrator, the narrator implores viewers to call Quan and say, “This happened under your watch. Stop the police brutality.”

2. Move On should use that money to rent a storefront in Oakland, instead.

Get a minister to call it a church, leave it open around the clock for "worship" (involving prostration on the floor in a sleeping bag as part of the expression of faith), and stop with the "Fight the cops" stuff. Get back to the 'corporate corruption/jobs/government malfeasance with corporate entities' focus.

I hear what you're saying, but one way they can stop the movement is via police forces. How can the movement survive if the cops can attack the protesters and the mayor doesn't pay a political price for it? Not just in Oakland but in all cities.

Let's be open and upfront. There are ordinances on the books in Oakland, Indianapolis, even Boston (which are for now being ignored--but the police/government have weather on their side) that are being violated left and right. There IS wiggle room everywhere there is an OWS encampment for the police to take action.

All I am saying is don't give them the wiggle room. Obey the ordinances, communicate the message with vigorous demonstration, teachable moments, etc., but do it when there are people around. Who's around those parks and plazas from ten to five in the morning? No one but the "true believers." Hold marches, with permits, and make 'em big. People will come. In droves. If they don't get the route they want, get lawyers to go with 'em to apply for the permits.

The camping thing was a great attention getter. After a while, though, it will fade into the background and/or become a nuisance to people who live/work nearby. That's inevitable. The negatives coming from pissed-off taxpayers will far outweigh the positives of the spirit of cameraderie, fellowship, etc. and the message will get lost in the mix.

I think either renting a space and calling it a church or even a homeless shelter, or pairing with church storefronts is a way to have that cake and eat it too. There's an opportunity for cameraderie and fellowship, behind closed doors, in a way that would -- assuming good behavior--be harder for police to crack down on. They are raising money left and right, surely some of that cash could go to these storefront churches to meet their expenses and even plus up their coffers for other purposes. Quid pro quo.

They just need to work smarter. I am bothered by all this fighting with the cops. It will not end well. It does not advance the message. It looks like a bunch of homeless people fighting the cops from the perspective of people turning on the evening news. No one talks about the message of the OWS effort, they talk about poop in the park, sex in sleeping bags, and police-protester clashes. That kind of coverage simply isn't helping get the word out about jobs and corporate malefeasance and government corruption and economic parity.

I just think that if there isn't a course correction in the near future, this thing will not sustain itself.

6. I think there might be an opportunity there.

The whole idea of limiting access, closing parks at ten, making people sit up or not bring a shelter with them, is to maximize discomfort and cause the whole effort to fade away.

Maybe some of these churches could offer up their space in the evenings, in exchange for donations and maybe a little handyman work. You don't have to be religious to sleep on the floor of a church, either. Certainly an easier proposition than continually violating ordinances and making this whole movement not about Wall Street, but instead about a street fight.
