Soldier: Scott Olsen is pictured on the right just before he was injured by police officers, above, and also as a Marine when he was serving in Iraq.

War hero: Two tour Iraq veteran Scott Olsen was left critically injured after being hit in the face by a police tear gas canister during a March through Oakland, California on Tuesday night.

Shocking: Mr Olsen has a scarf pressed to his bleeding wound by fellow protesters as he lies on the ground.

Solidarity: A picture of Scott Olsen, 24, the former Marine who was shot in the head by a police projectile during a protest on Tuesday night, is surrounded by candles during a demonstration on Wednesday in Oakland, California

3. It's honestly hard to believe no politicians have said anything about this...
have I missed something?

Those so-called law-enforcement officers stood by while one of their own shot a tear gas canister directly into a crowd of people attempting to help an injured person.

WTF does it take FFS?!

Politicians and pundits alike were falling all over themselves condemning the brutality against protestors during the Arab Spring, but this is apparently OK?

Sickening. Fucking sickening.

6. There's a general Occupy Vigil for him tonight
http://www.occupytogether.org /

This morning Occupy Oakland and Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) put out a call for occupations across America and around the world to hold solidarity vigils for Scott Olsen, a former Marine and two time Iraq War veteran. Olsen sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head on October 25 with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march.

Occupy Oakland and IVAW — an organization that Scott Olsen is a member of — are organizing the Oakland vigil. It will be held today, Thursday, October 27, 7:00pm PST, during the General Assembly of Occupy Oakland at 14th St. and Broadway.

They are also calling on other occupations that are part of the 99% movement to take time to vigil for Scott this evening. Some occupations will take a few moments during their General Assembly to hold Scott in their thoughts, to honor his commitment to social justice, and to hope for his strong recovery.

45. I have some words: Where the fuck have all of you been the last decade?
been PLENTY of young troops getting killed and wounded. But little outrage! I read DU every day, just like eveyrone else, news about troops plight has dminished over the years. Albeit less than MSM, but I do notice it.

But now, a young marine - who happens to be useful for your political purposes - is laying in the hospital, and everyone talks about him as if he is a piece of meat. Stop riding our fucking coat tails. Its bad enough the republicans have been doing it for a decade.

It's an insult. The veteran community is not stupid, we know that we are basically cast offs from society anyway. When ANY group - except the real advocates ie Fischer House, IAVA, Intrepid Fallen Heroes - suddenly wraps its arms around us, we know it's bullshit.

Kinda like when everyone was wrapping their arms around us during the invasion of Iraq, and then a year later I come home and everyone is embroiled in gay marriage, and nary a thing about my plight. It feels like bullshit.

There were protestors throwing bottles at PD. They have young Olsen's blood on their hands as well. The right thing to do by Olsen, and the rest of us - and to save the OWS cause - is to find those people and turn them over to PD.

Now everyone get mad at me for being an asshole. Ive sat in this country for the past decade while everyone passes us by, denigrates us, specifically on this forum, as blood thirsty killer sociopathic weirdos. And thats alright. Everyone else not in the service thinks they know what its like anyway. It is sickening to see everyone jump on this bandwagon. This kid is going to have giant bills. Maybe instead of reposting the same bullshit "anger", you all should be posting about how to organize a fund for him. I wont hold my breath for that one.

46. I believe that your anger and frustration is justified. Now I can only speak for myself
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 01:52 PM by totodeinhere
but my opposition to the wars has not translated into opposition or contempt for our troops. Quite the contrary, I respect our troops and have nothing for best wishes for them. And I think it's a travesty that the GOP wants to cut veterans' benefits. And I don't look at anyone as a "piece of meat." I genuinely feel anger at the way that he was beaten up by the police. If there were bottles thrown at the police that is wrong, but even in that case the police need to remain professional and do all they can to avoid violence. And that in no way takes away for my longstanding support from our troops.

If you can find any comments at DU that disparage our troops rather than the war mongering policy that put them in harms way, please point it out.
I would like to know about it so I can give that poster a piece of my mind. I haven't seen anything like that but on a Net message board open to everyone anything is possible and the moderators can only do their best but they might have missed it.

47. What he needs is a good lawyer.
I have never felt anything but respect for soldiers, as I come from a military family. I understand why you're angry, but it isn't good for you to keep it going. I have learned to forgive, but I never forget and that works for me. I think what you're seeing now is the culmination of all the anger and distress people have been feeling for many years. People would say that you wore a tinfoil hat to insult you if you pointed out what seemed to be the obvious corruption taking place. Now, it cannot be denied. The government is corrupt. Has been for quite a while. I think we're making a big deal out of this because we respect those who had the courage to defend us in a war. That includes him and you. Even if we thought the wars were based on lies and greed, we still appreciate your service and admire your courage. This should never have happened to him or anyone. It is sickeningly ironic that a soldier got injured by an out-of-control cop while other officers just did nothing. The police are supposed to be above provocation.
Please feel better.

I already got an email from my wingnut brother claiming Scott Olsen ran a website called ihatethemarinecorps.com a few years ago.

It won't matter if it is true or not, Olsen is about to receive the full demonization treatment because the right knows he could be a powerful image for OWS.

Anything Olsen ever said or did that can be used against him is most likely about to be all over the news. I hope he's ready for spotlight, because he is going to be in it now whether he wants it or not.

It's really about time. They realize that they have no future unless things start changing NOW and all power to the people! What happened in Oakland is just inexcusable, but at least the pigs (corporate and "law" enforcement) are obviously a bit worried at the peasants with pitchforks and torches coming after them.
