Why is the State of CA, allowing the City of Fresno to continue to kill off those who are Homeless?
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 09:25 AM by annm4peace
I just can't understand it. Where is the law ? where is the justice?
For the 1ast 10 years Mike has fought to try and stop the attacks on the Homeless, yet the Feds and the STate of CA allow it to happen.
1/3 of those being attached are under age 18.

Once again the City of Fresno is destroying the only shelter those who are Homeless have been able to gather together.

Don't believe the lies told by the City of Fresno in that they have offered help. They have only helped .01% of the homeless.

The Feds, or the State of CA or a NGO needs to come in an help the Homeless.

The Shelters have been full for the last 10 years. There is not even 1 psych hospital in Fresno. not one. A person has to be taken 2-3 hours away, if there is a openning. Yet Fresno is surrounded by Prisons.

Nov brings rain and very heavy fog.. the temperatures will dip down to the 40's and 30's.. with the fog day after day.. that makes for dangerous environment. We have emailed the Governor and Attorney General. I don't know what else to do except to keep posting this info. Help will not come from Fresno Government. Please, if you can get Ed Shultz, Al Sharpton, Keith Olbermann, or Michael Moore to do a show from there.. please let them know. I have given up on emailing politicians.

The City of Fresno and Caltrans did what they said they were going to do today - they attacked the homeless encampment on Santa Fe street in downtown Fresno. But, they did not destroy the encampment without being confronted with significant resistance by community members who protested the eviction. The first photo (below) shows a line of resistance that formed when the City of Fresno made their first attempt to destroy the homeless encampment.

2. My previous posts

For background about this struggle, see:

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/10/22/18694453.ph...

To see video from today's press conference at City Hall, calling on the city to call off the evictions, see:

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/10/26/18695320.ph...

City officials lie when they say they have resources for the homeless they are evicting from the tent cities.
City of Fresno, Caltrans, US Railroad enforcement, have again and again destroyed these people's cardboard shacks, tents, and toss away their personal possessions.

Contacting Mayor Swearengin and your City Council Member:
Basic message – (#1 is the most important now.) A short clear message is best.
1. I oppose the City’s plan to evict homeless residents of the encampments in downtown Fresno beginning on Thursday. I’m asking the City to allow the homeless people to stay in the encampments until there is a workable plan to provide basic shelter.

2. Until that solution is reached, provide them with water, toilets, and regular trash collection.
Information on reaching Mayor Swearengin and your city council member is available at www.fresno.gov . Or see below.

Calling Mayor Swearengin and your city council member at (559) 621-8000:

Phone may ring several times. A recording will answer “Administrative Offices for the City of Fresno…” and you will be put on hold until someone answers. That person can also take a message for your city councilmember so you should be prepared to ask that the message go to both the mayor and your city council member. If you don’t know the name of your city council member check first at http://www.fresno.gov/Government/CityCouncil/CouncilLoc... .

Emailing Mayor Swearengin, your city council member, and all the city council members:

It’s easy from the City’s website. Go to www.fresno.gov , from the home page click on “Mayor’s Office” or “City Council” on the left of the screen. You can make your feelings known to all the city council members via email. Not hard when you cut and paste. They want to know how people in the city feel about issues of the day.

10. War Against the Poor Part 2.
Shameful. Where are the Congress members from Central CA ? One of them IS a Democrat yet what has he done to stop this ?

Where are the "evagelical churches ??? Such a perfect example of Conservative Government.

At about 3 p.m. this afternoon there was a standoff on the Caltrans section of the homeless encampment on Santa Fe street in downtown Fresno. Homeless advocates stood in front of a tent, preventing Caltrans workers from taking and destroying it.

On the right is James Betts, the attorney the city hired to defend them last time they were in Federal Court for taking and destroying homeless people’s property.

In this load the bulldozer operator has a tent and chair which he is dumping into the back of a truck. How they determined that this was garbage is not known.

4. IMO it's sadly how a capitalistic country operates, survival of the fittest and
neglect/death to the others.

5. I apologize for the large pictures. I took them from the site

This was some of the people who showed up at 7 a.m. this morning to support the homeless

After two tents were destroyed, homeless advocates positioned themselves in front of other tents to protect them. This held off Caltrans for a while.

City of Fresno workers took advantage of the confrontation on the north end of the encampment with the CHP and Caltrans to start the destruction of the south end. They moved homeless property out onto the road, declared that it was garbage and destroyed it.

8. We have a system of punishment, not of "pursuit of happiness"
or of liberty. In brief, it is that simple.

Our system is one based on bribery. Homeless folks can't regularly pay "the pimp", so they're specially treated with numerous "nickel and dime" types of legalized stalking. The more that is paid to the pimp, the less stalking that is experienced.

Wish it wasn't so, but that's how I see it.
