The name of the bill is not mentioned here.

New Bill Being Considered In Congress Could Shut Down Social Media Sites Crucial To ‘Occupy’ Protests
October 27, 2011
By Stephen D. Foster Jr.

In what would be a stunning disregard for First Amendment rights, rumors are swirling that the Republican controlled Congress is now considering a new bill that could blackout sites such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and other sites that utilize content generated by users. Phones such as iPhone, Android, AmazonCloud, Pandora, Grooveshark and even your email accounts would be adversely affected.

Some provisions in the bill would make it a “felony to stream unlicensed content — including cover band performances, karaoke videos, video game play-throughs, and more.” Major profit driven corporations are the driving force behind such a bill.

This bill could also effectively silence the ‘Occupy’ movement that has swept the nation by killing information sharing. Most Americans currently get most of their news about ‘Occupy’ through social media. If social media sites were to shut down because of the bill, Americans would be less likely to see ‘Occupy’ footage and would thus be in the dark, forcing us all to rely on corporate owned media sources. This bill is dangerous and would be a major blow to constitutionally protected freedom of speech. This is nothing more than government sponsored censorship and must be stopped.

3. I seem to recall reading the language of the bill and it does not
appear to be what others say it is.

I question anyone that provides an attempt to stop something without knowing the bill that is being introduced. No bill number. No language.

Something along the line of a spam. Not a hit on you.

6. I was thinking that it was just a matter of time
before something like this would surface. Rumored or not, I don't think that it's a stretch to realize that some might be scrambling as we speak to figure out ways on how to stop this movement and it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to try and keep one step ahead if at all possible!

7. This has been posted today more than once.
It's a reference to the Protect IP bill from the Senate. A similar bill is being introduced in the House. From my reading of it, it won't affect anything having to do with the Occupy movement. It's designed to protect copyright-protected material and other intellectual property from being shared on the Internet. That nobody identifies the bill in this seemingly ubiquitous post, I'd be cautious in assuming that the information is correct.

9. Thanks, was just going to post this, it's on Kos as well.

*Diary Amended: The other half is presented... and the picture clears up! Thanks to KOS user David Segal who let me know another scary bill that will work in tandem with the House Bill has been in the works for months. Senate bill or S.968 is the Protect IP Act. It grants the government powers to block user’s access to websites accused of copyright infringement. *

10. The bill would be unconstitutional and should be instantly struck down by the courts but ...
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 06:19 PM by jimlup
If it did pass - hackers would instantly find solutions that would leave the Reptilian congress totally dumbfounded. It would be time for the hacking community to take control of the internet and there would then be a major cyberspace game of cat and mouse and the mice (us) will win unless they shut the whole fucking thing down and that would trigger a revolution.

Those idiots just don't have a clue do they?
