Scott Olsen 'cannot talk' after injury at Occupy Oakland protest

Scott Olsen, the Iraq war veteran who was seriously injured by a police projectile during a protest in Oakland, has regained consciousness but "cannot talk".

Olsen, 24, is communicating with friends and family at his bedside by writing notes, but his injury is believed to have damaged the speech centre of his brain, according to Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq.

Olsen is believed to have been injured by a police projectile. He was hit in the forehead in downtown Oakland on Tuesday evening, after marching with fellow demonstrators to protest the closure of an Occupy Oakland camp in the city.

"He cannot talk right now, and that is because the fracture is right on the speech center of his brain," said Shannon. "However, they are expecting he will get that back."

1. The Guardian may be a little behind on this.
I've seen a couple of recent posts saying that he was talking. Could be a paper in England isn't getting the latest information.

3. It's too bad that the media in the U.S. appears to be ignoring the story.
The only media reports I've seen have been in England. Can you post links to U.S. media publishing the story?

Google News is where you can find it. I had no trouble at all. There are at least 850 stories in the media - some just a few minutes old. You can read as many as you wish. The press is covering this. I can't imagine why you thought otherwise.

8. Thanks for that links. All the stories I've seen here are UK sources, and news in NC is ignoring it.

6. my dad had strokes in the broca brain area where speech and
language originate. this could affect reading as well. I hope not. He's a sweet young kid who deserves a life. He already has done more right now with his courage, goodness and injury than the FUCKING CONGRESS HAS DONE SINCE 2000! Get well, sweet boy.
