3. Interesting choice of an item depicted on the cover
considering that TPTB have been arresting protestors for using a bullhorn without a license. Perhaps that's what it portrays; has the user of that bullhorn been hauled off to jail?

Do we expect this story to be fair and balanced?

Look at the subtitle.

7. Does anyone else know what the "silent majority" used to mean?
I have a very old newspaper clipping, with a family member's obituary. According to the paper, someone had just joined the silent majority -- i.e., had just died.

10. More people are alive today than had ever existed in the past.
The living far outnumber all those who have died.

13. This is what Wikipedia says about that:
The phrase had been in use for much of the 19th century to refer to the dead—the number of living people is less than the number who have died. Phrases such as "gone to a better world", "gone before", and "joined the silent majority" served as euphemisms for "he died".<3> In 1902, Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan employed this sense of the phrase, saying in a speech that "great captains on both sides of our Civil War have long ago passed over to the silent majority, leaving the memory of their splendid courage."<4>

11. The silent majority if I remember right was the "MASS OF GOOD
FOLKS WHO DIDN'T MAKE WAVES" upon which Richard Nixon pinned his shit. You know, the working folks who didn't like hippies. A few decades ago, that title would have a different meaning. VICTORY! Someone finally made a decent expression out of it. :)

12. That was the much more recent definition.
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 03:21 PM by pnwmom
The definition popularized by Nixon and other Republican politicians. But in the 19th century, it was a euphemism for the dead.

17. I remember my family saying that. :) I had aunts and gparents who
were born in the mid to late 1800's and they lived very long lives. Going west was another way of saying someone died.
