Happy Birthday, Lady Liberty! 125 years!
The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall standA mighty woman with a torch, whose flameIs the imprisoned lightning, and her nameMother of Exiles. From her beacon-handGlows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes commandThe air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame."Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries sheWith silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus, 1883

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886.

4. We are now ready to amend Ms. Lazarus' immortal words
To conform to our present post-9/11 world, I suggest we add "Void where prohibited" to the plaque, so as not to discomfit certain of our fellow citizens.

5. (Don't tell the conservatives she's French - it'll break their little hearts)
And for that matter, don't tell Michelle Bachmann that Paul Revere was French, either, as she would spontaneously combust.

6. Wasn't she banned from public in 2003 when the French didn't support
our invasion of Iraq, kind of like French toast?
