She was one incredible woman. Two years ago - at the age of 92 - she ws a poll watcher for Obama. A true "yellow dog" Democrat, she never voted for a Republican in her life.
She was around before cars were common. She was a photographer, a CPA, and became my mom at 38. Dad was 7 years younger!
I weep for her, but more for me. Who am I going to call in Florida when it's 45 below zero here? I hurt so bad.
Thanks, DU for being here and caring.

I lost my mom to cancer when I was a teenager, but have been fortunate to still have my dad at almost 93. I try to prepare myself for the inevitable, but I know there really is no way. She sounds like a great woman, and really did live a long , and from what you've said, good life, and I hope and pray that knowing that will soften the pain in your heart as time goes by.

but think of the life she lead, the things she accomplished and the history she saw. My own mother was born in 1902 and was a true devotee of FDR and John Kennedy. She died ten years ago and I do still miss her, father too. Cherish the old letters and the old photographs for part of her is there still. Celebrate her life that way.

I've had the good fortune to only remember losing one family member, my great grandmother died when I was too young to feel the impact of her death, but my grandfather passed away from cancer of the liver and it was painful...not only to watch, but to see him when the life was gone from him.
I helped carry the casket and stood silent when the honor guard fired their shots, they handed me an American flag folded into a triangle which I keep in my room in view at all times.
I'm sure many people understand how you feel and there will always be someone to comfort you, so look to the future, mourn your loved one, but honor them in your deeds and do not dwell for that is the mistake I have made with my grandfather - his passing, the reason he died, is why I hate the American political system so much...
Once more, I sympathize with you and wish you the best, but do not let your life center around it, that is the only advice I can give.

can't imagine i'll ever get over losing her but i believe we'll be together again--in another time and place--(just as i believe we've been together before).
i'm sorry you're hurting it's times like these that show us how bittersweet love it.
and the wonderful thing about all that love is that it goes on and on--it doesn't stop or have to stop. and it's that love that will keep the two of you connected.
i can only offer up a hug, maybe a bowl of warm soup, a blanket.
i'm really sorry for your tremendous loss. try to take care.

At 92, she saw a lot and lived through some of the best and worst times in America. It must have been hard for her to see this great nation sink to the levels it has at the hands of the wealthy. She lived thru the times when people helped each other and shared and held common values. When a family could survive on one income, doctors actually came to your home, and the family ate meals together. I was fortunate to live and see some of those times. I know how dearly she must have treasured the memories of her life.
I hope she's home now. Back with the ones she shared all those years with.

82. I feel for you, and my prayers are with you. I think you will always have those ... |
|
...moments when you start to think about calling her or going to see her, and then remember. Trust me, these will be less painful, and will actually turn more to pleasant remembrances. Even though, you will never totally get over it, but it will be nowhere near as painful. I have just passed the 9 month anniversary of Mom passing, she was 89. You will likely see things that you will think are her trying to let you know it's okay. I had several real as life dreams, I had a fan that was making an un-earthly sound one night, I woke up several times when I heard my name yelled down the hallway, and no one was there. Your mileage may vary, just be open to the possibility and you will learn so much.
Best of luck, northofdenali

of sorrow for your loss, n.o.d. Not today, not tomorrow, but sometime in the weeks ahead your memories of all that she was for you and accomplished in her life will bring a smile before the tears, I hope.
If you have photos, throw yourself into organizing them - for yourself if no one else. It may help.
My mom passed a year ago and, at least for me, it did help to spend time on organizing some aspects of her legacy for the family.
Here is an arm on your shoulder,

great woman. But she is the lucky one....she has comfort, peace, and happiness. Total freedom.
I just attended my aunt's funeral yesterday...because I was raised by a single mother, I spent many summer days at my Aunt's. She was like a second mother. She had three children and we had fun playing on their farm.
I hate funerals, but I got through it, the burial, and the reception without a tear. Today, I'm a blob of tears. So unhappy.

A few minutes after I first read this, and was trying to think of some response, I took one of my dogs out to do his morning business. I could hear, very far in the distance, a train going through a community about 12 miles away. Sometimes, either late at night or early in the morning, the sound carries up through the valley between the mountains.
My father, like his father and many other family members, found employment on the railroads of central New York. One night, a few years after my father died, I was outside -- catching fire flies -- with my daughters. When we heard the lonely train whistle, my younger daughter said, "Well, hi, Grampa!" She was five years old at the time.
That always stuck with me. I'm confident that you will have opportunities to tell your Mother how cold (or warm, etc) it is.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I "lost" my mom years ago, although she's still living.
I lost my mom to FOX News in the early 90s. It ruined our relationship. Although I never discuss politics and religion with her, she frequently voices her rabid far-right views in politics and religion. I learned long ago that it does no good to have a conversation.
I "talk" with her every day, mostly just listening. Weather. Recipes. Grandchildren. Her aches and pains. Her very small, isolated world. But I wouldn't call these talks "conversations." We never, ever laugh or connect. I never look forward to our "talks." She often brings up her friends on FOX. I play on-line Boggle while she goes on and on and on. At least I know what the talking-point memo of the day is at FOX -- long before many of you. ;)

160. I am so sad to hear this. Not easy, ever, to lose our parents. |
|
My mom lived to be 96 and was a diehard fundamentalist, very right wing. She was not easy to deal with at times, but I practiced as best I could the patience, kindness, love and all those other Baptist values she taught me as I was growing up. We did not agree on many things, but when the end came I was with her and in her last cognizant moments I told her she did good, her whole life. And that I love her, followed by a final hug. So difficult watching her slip away...after 7 years, I still weep at the memory. Your mother sounds quite extraordinary, as do you. In the DNA, I'm guessing! You were both fortunate indeed.
Peace and blessings.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my mom in 04 (she was only 55) so I know what you are going thru. Take solace in the years you had, keep the good memories and let the bad ones go. The pain is incredible for a while but it will get better, I promise. Keep your chin up.

|
I wasn't that close but it still hurts.
Time won't heal the pain but it will get better.
Your Mom sounded like a great woman, and lived a full life.
I lost both parents last year.
The worst part is not being able to talk to them again.
Cry when you need to, and remember the good times.

... this year. Lost my Dad a year ago, and for a while on Christmas morning this last year, we were wondering if we were going to lose my Mom then too when we took her too emergency then. Fortunately, she's recovering well now.
I'm sorry for your loss. Will keep having me think good wishes for everyone now, especially with our economy and health care becoming harder for everyone to get to now!
Not sure what I will do when they are both gone too. They've been a great voice to turn to all of my life. Again, take care!

You know, I believe that being a progressive, liberal or whatever one chooses to call themselves keeps people younger and they live longer. R.I.P. to your mom. Peace to you and your surviving family members.

|
I bet she saw a lot history being made in her blessed life time.
But she'll live on in your heart and thoughts.
Man, I would have loved to hear some of the stories about her experiences in life and some of the things shes seen come about.
Time will heal the wound but love will keep her memory alive in you always.

When we lose our parents, we lose a bit of ourselves, our history, since they knew us before we knew ourselves. This is particularly true of mothers. You may not be able to call her any more but you can still talk to her in heaven. My heart goes out to you; I've been there and know how you feel.

But glad she made it to 92. I lost my mom when she was only 65. Like yours, she was an exceptional woman.
Hopefully, it will only take a few years to get past the point of reaching for the phone to talk to mom about the weather, your wife, you job, or whatever and suddenly realizing that the call won't be answered.
She will always live on in your heart though~

... as it does me.
I felt connected hearing you tell us about your mother. She could have been friends due to attributes and age to my mom, who I lost a few years ago.
Sometimes when I look at the clock, it's 11:11, which is a time that mom and I used to say that you'd be able to connect with someone who's crossed over the other side.
You surely miss your wonderful mom and I want you to know that it's gonna be okay cause we can weep together right now and know they're there for us always.
The love us always, remember that, and you'll be comforted.

I can't fly - docs won't let me. She lived, and died in the hellhole of Florida.
17 hours on a plane isn't in my future. The last time I flew in Bush's admin, I was basically srip searched - going to my daughter's wedding.
I won't fly commercial again.
Thank you all. I love my DU friends  and will NOT give up on my nation.
