The Right Launches A Smear Campaign Against Occupy Oakland’s Scott Olsen
The Right Launches A Smear Campaign Against Occupy Oakland’s Scott Olsen

The Gateway Pundit is the go to site for the extreme ideological right wing. It also has the journalistic integrity of North Korea. In the latest post by this vile website, Jim Hoft, Gateway’s owner wrote and posted this article titled “Good Grief… Leftie Hero Scott Olsen Is Founder of “I Hate the Marines Corps.com” & Is a Jew-Basher”.

Now, knowing the right wing’s history of fabrication and lies I dug into the history of the website they reference, IHATETHEMARINECORPS.COM. It turns out that it is registered to Scott Olsen, BUT it is registered to Scott Olsen from Milan, Illinois.

SNIP

The Scott Olsen the Gateway Pundit is referencing is Scott Olsen from Onalaska, Wisconsin who was critically injured at Occupy Oakland. Scott moved to California after finding a job in the information technology field in San Francisco, with the help of his roommate Keith Shannon. The distance from Onalaska WI to Milan Ill. is over 200 miles away.

The website they reference was created on January 28th 2009. Scott was deployed to Iraq twice. The first time, August 2006 to May 2007 and then from 2008-2009, he left the Marines in November of 2009.

SNIP

How many Scott Olsens are in the United States? We don’t even know if the Scott Olsen that created the website was even in the Marines, but we do know, by looking into the history of the website, that the Scott Olsen the website is registered to is from Illinois, not Wisconsin.

2. Oh, c'mon. How many "Scott Olsen"s could there BE?
probably upwards of several hundred, at least, in the continental US.

4. More like thousands. I don't have a common name at ALL, and there is a woman
in the Valley with the exact same name as me.

I do genealogy research and I would hate like hell to have to research a common name like Scott Olsen. It wouldn't be a whole lot easier than John Smith.

So now they are reduced to cooking up false slime stories on a United States marine who served his country and is now laying in a hospital bed severely injured with a brain injury.

These folks are irredeemable, there are no depths of slime they will refuse to dig into.

5. Nothing is beneath them. Everyone is fair game.
All that matters is winning whatever game they are playing. They disgust me.

6. If it's not the same Scott Olsen, it's an outrageous smear
But even if it is, he'd have every right to hate the Marines. He put in his time and served honorably, unlike so many conservatives who claim to love the military but who would shit their pants if they came within 100 miles of a fire fight.

7. Even if it was the same Olsen, who the fuck cares?
Doesn't change the fact that a vet was shot in the skull by Oakland police.

8. There are 7 in Kenosha WI
I know this because when I heard his name, I recognized it as one of my customers names when I was in insurance. It wasn't him, but there were 7 in the Keno phone book. On line there were more than 60 in WI alone.

10. This morning i was listening to a right wing host
named Chris Plante bash Olsen. The whole thing is one big lie because his left wing fanatical buddies were throwing bricks and Olsen's head got in the way. He wasn't shot with a cannister by a cop at all.

14. LOL, Chris Plante is a buffoon...
He used to be on the radio in the DC area on what was once upon a time the popular news/weather/traffic channel. Now it is 24/7 right wing talk echo chamber. Maybe he is still around, but from what I remember he was really quite a stupid person. I don't mean stupid just because he was so right wing, I mean he was obviously not even remotely intelligent.

21. I know. He's an idiot.
One night years ago I called his show. I have never call any show before, or since then. That night, I completely turned his show in the opposite direction he was trying to go. The rest of the night his own callers were agreeing with what I said. It was hilarious. He was trying to paint some shit on democrats and I proved that it was actually republicans that were responsible.

I was surprised at how easy it was to "get him".

He's pretty stupid.

22. Hahaha, good on you!
I wouldn't have the patience to call a show like his. Normally, you can't really have a conversation with a blow hard like that because he gets to frame the debate and mute you whenever he wants. I applaud you for apparently knocking him off stride and ruining his night.

...was Scott Olsen. Not the same one. He'd be old enough to be the Marine Olsen's dad.

If you read the whole article on the link in the OP, the 'smear' has been debunked.

first, his flickr photostream at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/14375183@N07/page7/
that is definitely him in a number of the pictures.

second,
this pledgie request he appears to have created using the same user name solsen230.
http://pledgie.com/accounts/solsen230
a member since may of last year, so it's not recent unless hacked.

Of course, there still may be hacking involved, but I'm getting a feeling there isn't.

I reiterate, this has nothing to do with what happened at the occupy.

On edit...
what is useful here is for any future discussions and ad hominem defenses.

13. Pretty sure this is already on right wing radio..
..and my wingnut brother sent it to me this morning.

The claim is that it is the same Scott Olsen and that he still references the "I hate the marine corps" thing on his twitter and youtube channel.

Either way, hopefully Olsen gets well soon and is prepared for an avalanche of attacks and smears. Anything he has ever said, done or put on the internet will be used against him. And if his discharge is anything but honorable he will be attacked for it (even thought he apparently won a pile of medals). For PR purposes, it would be better if it he really didn't host the website in question - but the man served and has a right to say whatever he wants.

of Minnesota & Wisconsin. In Minneapolis alone, you can have two Olsens, who are unrelated, living on the same apartment floor and it wouldn't be weird at all. Disgusting smears.

It's easy to attack the character of someone lying in a hospital bed.
