By Ed Dante

Editor's note: Ed Dante is a pseudonym for a writer who lives on the East Coast. Through a literary agent, he approached The Chronicle wanting to tell the story of how he makes a living writing papers for a custom-essay company and to describe the extent of student cheating he has observed. In the course of editing his article, The Chronicle reviewed correspondence Dante had with clients and some of the papers he had been paid to write. In the article published here, some details of the assignment he describes have been altered to protect the identity of the student.

1. I was asked to do a student's paper once.
Some years ago, I made a little extra money typing papers for college students and a nearby law school. A guy called one day and wanted me to do his whole paper, research and all.

When I refused and called that cheating, he got really snippy with me and said "everybody does it." I hope he flunked out.

2. It's scandalously prevalent.
Far too many Americans start cheating far to young and they never quit...

3. I don't think so...
I assign really narrow assignments.
I did catch students plagiarizing my copying entire papers off Wikipedia. My reaction to them: "You must really think I'm stupid." They plagiarized on an assignment covering my former adviser's book.

4. I remember in college hearing that the frat houses had
file cabinets of old tests and papers that were from people who had taken the courses in previous years. We thought that was a big deal, but it wasn't cheating. Occasionally you'd hear of a teaching assistant who was paid off to reveal what some of the questions on the exam would be about.

But for the most part, when I was in college, we actually studied for the courses, did the work, and got the grades we deserved. At least thats what I thought. This was pre-internet, and I'm sure its much easier to cheat now.
