I was recently moved from one team to another. I worked stupid (free) hours for the 1st team
Then without any warning was demoted to the other team.

Today my manager sent me an irc message saying how " funny" it would be if I dressed up as if I still had the previous position as part of the Halloween costume contest.

I have never cried about anything at work, but I did cry ( at home) when I was summarily demoted even though the code I test was operating AS DESIGNED and as SPEC'D

Am I being overly "sensitive"? Or was this manager as beyond the pale as I think?

3. There are no assholes like management assholes.
Get out of there as soon as you can - it sounds like a poisonous work culture.

13. First make sure that you aren't miss reading the situation.Maybe
there was another problem. Ask you boss nicely. If it is a mishandling or misunderstanding and it is not remedied. You will probably be on your way out no matter what. Keep doing your best and looking for opportunities to get ahead. There or another job. Good luck. It was probably not fault and will be resolved.

5. No, you're not being oversensitive. Always remember: it's them, not you.
Not oversensitive to be upset by that kind of crap. Just self-defeating to let them see it upsets you. Decline his suggestion and live to fight another day.

11. Said it was not a demotion. Claimed it was a lateral move. But to go from lead QA to
Subordinate team member does seem a demotion, doesn't it? Even though he goes out of his way to explain it is not.

16. Have you considered the possibility that they will get rid of the current lead
on your new team? If it truly is a lateral move, you should still be the lead, no?

14. I don't understand the details of your grievance, but to my gut that sounds like
manegerial abuse of authority.

Never work "free hours" again. Document all of your work, and memorialize it in an email, and keep a copy for yourself, too.

18. that's good advice. In fact I would advise anyone to keep a daily journal of the goings on at work
even if it is a good day, jot down significant events or conversations. Written documentation can be evidence in a court of law. The practice worked well for me when I landed on an account where my manager was a racist, sexist, vile excuse for a human being. In fact, I got him fired twice. Once when he was fired from the company I worked for. The second time was when the company he went to work for- hired my company to do their facilities management.

One more piece of advice, don't leave your journal at the office.

22. Agreed
Document everything and simply don't dress up for Halloween at all. If asked don't respond just do your work.

21. Document, keep looking, but ...
... it's been my experience that taking things to HR never leads to any positive outcome.

I do not mean to offend anyone who works in HR, but I have found that most companies use the HR complaint process to provide their employees with some free, perhaps unlicensed, psychological counseling. People in HR will listen, provide guidance and insights, but rarely are they empowered to do anything unless it's a repeat violation that would interest the EEOC.

I'm kinda hoping to get blasted here, because perhaps that means I've just had less than ideal luck working for subsidiaries of Weyland-Yutani.

23. I believe you are correct
My view upon HR is that they spend most of their time planning where to go to lunch and little if anything positive for the workers.

That however, is my opinion based only upon what I have seen through the years.
