In spite of the fact that humans have far more in common with their fellow humans (no matter their color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, political persuasion, etc.) than differences, and in spite of the fact that what we have in common is far more important to our survival as a species, we tend to notice and focus upon our differences instead of what we have in common.
It seems that the only times when we can “come together” is when we have a common enemy: US vs THEM. After “victory over the enemy”, however, the tendency then is to turn on ourselves again and begin purging those who are insufficiently “like us”. This has been going on throughout all of recorded history, so it's not new.
Of course, conflict and controversy are "good for" the MSM and for Faux News. They love it. “If it bleeds, it leads.” They’ll even make stuff up if they have to. It boosts ratings and viewership, which means more money for them.
We have real problems to address in our Country and in the world; everything from global warming, to unemployment, to hunger, homelessness, poverty, and more. We must resist being distracted by phony problems like “anchor babies”, same-sex marriage, celebrity divorces, Presidential birth certificates, and Creationism. Remember these truisms: "United we Stand; Divided we Fall", "A house divided against itself cannot stand.", "We must hang together or we will most certainly all hang separately" (Ben Franklin)"?
We must BE the change we want to SEE in the world. We must learn to cooperate and discuss together our COMMON concerns and coordinate with those who are seeking real solutions. We must agree when we can and compromise when we must, like our Founding Fathers did. That will keep us more than busy enough for the rest of our lives and will contribute more benefit to our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren than continuing to decry our differences. Conflict, controversy, and competition are the PROBLEM. Cooperation and working for the COMMON WELFARE are the ANSWER.
We have only One Earth. We will “sink or swim” TOGETHER; live or die TOGETHER. That’s it. There is no other alternative.
