Police chief visits Scott Olsen in hospital
(10-28) 17:35 PDT OAKLAND -- Scott Olsen, the 24-year-old Iraq war veteran who suffered a head injury during Tuesday night's Occupy Oakland protest, was paid a visit by interim Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan on Friday.

Olsen is in fair condition at Highland Hospital in Oakland and continues to improve, friends said. The Daly City resident is breathing on his own and is able to write notes to doctors and loved ones, but has trouble articulating words.

On Friday, Jordan said he had visited with Olsen and his parents.

"I expressed my sorrow for what happened to their son," Jordan said at a City Hall news conference. "They were very receptive. ... I also expressed to them the process that's involved in terms of this incident, in terms of a full review and internal investigation."

1. Internal investigation is NOT good enough.
There should be a detailed investigation conducted by an outside source.

early 90s).

Look, right now, every Oakland police officer has a bullseye painted on his or her back, but it's not most of their faults. Any internal investigation that so much as gives the appearance of a white wash will merely escalate the situation, much like the Simi Valley's acquittal of the LAPD officers in the initial Rodney King trial escalated that situation to a full-blown urban insurrection requiring armed soldiers to suppress.

What will de-escalate the situation? A criminal inquiry by the U.S. Dept of Justice and, perhaps, a Special Prosecutor.

Short of that, I see Jordan's internal investigation making matters far worse, not better. Is that what they want? Soldiers patrolling the streets of Oakland? The Oakland Police Department teeters on the brink of losing all public legitimacy right now and only bold actions will pull it back from that brink.

On edit: My post is premised on the assumption that the U.S. Dept. of Justice still retains at least some legitimacy in the eyes of the people. I understand there are some on DU who would take issue with that premise and I can understand where they are coming from. (Not like I haven't pondered it myself lately.)

13. yeah, he was just there to try to cover his own ass and
begin softening them up to keep the lawsuit down. You know the fuckers didn't care. THey refused to even call him an ambulance. The people carrying him off had to drive him to a hospital. If I were his parents, I would not have allowed him in or bothered to listen to his "apology"

I am not against the police but the actions of this department go way out of bounds.

Disgusting.

3. DOJ needs to get involved in a civil rights violation investigation.
Sigh. I suppose that's too much to expect. It's FAR more important that they harass medical cannabis users and suppliers.

19. If he were really sorry he'd arrest the cop that shot Scott
and charge him with assault with a deadly weapon, and/or attempted murder.

9. full review and investigation means
we're trying our damnedest to get any and all video or testimony destroyed before it goes viral. Protecting our turf means a lot more than any steeenking Constitutional rights.

10. The question I really want to ask is if Mr. Olsen had not been an Iraqi
War vet, would there still be this uproar...

I hope so but fear that it wouldn't...

11. They almost killed him.
But, you're right that the Marine network was called up and that amplified the response. That's a good thing.

He's off the respirator right? Breathing on his own? Coz my first thought was that they came to finish the job. lol

Just kidding for those of you who take every word of every poster literally and spend your day trying to find some tripe to bitch about. I think you know who u r.

14. Not good enough.
The pigs responsible should be prosecuted and imprisoned for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Nothing less will suffice.
