GOP bill would affirm 'In God We Trust' as national motto
By Pete Kasperowicz - 10/28/11 04:02 PM ET

House Republicans on Tuesday will try to pass a resolution reaffirming that "In God We Trust" is the national motto of the United States.

snip//

Democrats argued that at a time of high unemployment and a record-high budget deficit, it makes little sense to spend time on what could be a divisive bill.

"Instead of addressing any of these critical issues, and instead of working to help American families keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables, we are debating whether or not to affirm and proliferate a motto that was adopted in 1956 and that is not imperiled in any respect," they wrote in the committee report accompanying the bill.

"Without question, the Judiciary Committee has many important and time-sensitive matters within its purview," Democrats added. "The majority, however, seems intent on diverting the committee's time, resources and attention to a measure that has no force of law, only reaffirms existing law and further injects the hand of government into the private religious lives of the American people."

More specifically, Democrats argued that the resolution is unnecessary, and violates the prohibition on the government establishment of a religion.

48. yeah, it's not as if we don't have an economic crisis
at the moment. This is so much more important than finding relief for americans or passing bills to rebuild our infrastructure. I swear these guys are a bunch of out of touch sociopaths or completely looney tunes. How's that go? "Religion is the only thing that keeps the poor from killing the rich?" Oh, maybe I see a method to their madness--make this a theocratic state and make excuses for the wealth disparity. I'm sure one of the excuses will be, they really didn't exploit or steal to get massively wealthy-they were chosen by the big man in the sky.

of the bill is time wasted, time that could be spent on the items that the Dems mentioned. So why would the Dems want to debate, just pass the resolution and move on.

32. Interesting topic. The fundie lunatics would have us believe that
this motto has existed since the founding of the country, but the truth is that it was coined much later --

(from wiki):

"In God We Trust" was adopted as the official motto of the United States in 1956. It is also the motto of the U.S. state of Florida. The phrase has appeared on U.S. coins since 1864 and on paper currency since 1957.<1> Its Spanish equivalent, En Dios Confiamos, is the motto of the Central American nation of Nicaragua.

The phrase was conceived by Salmon P. Chase, the U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln.<1> Believing that no "nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins" wrote Chase in a letter to James Pollock, the Director of the Mint in Philadelphia.

61. I'm with Thomas Jefferson -

The term is an offshoot of the phrase, "wall of separation between church and state," as written in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802. The original text reads: "... I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." Jefferson reflected his frequent speaking theme that the government is not to interfere with religion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state

On Jefferson's religious beliefs -

Thomas Jefferson was always reluctant to reveal his religious beliefs<1> to the public, but at times he would speak to and reflect upon the public dimension of religion. He was raised as an Anglican, but was influenced by English deists such as Bolingbroke and Shaftesbury...

45. It would be interesting
to ask them the simple question of "why". Why is this important? I know the answer but I'm not sure they know the answer. It boils down to the equivalent of cultures that offered sacrifices to an angry god to protect them from natural disasters and societal calamities. They are trying to appease an angry god who has turned his back on the U.S.because of the "godless" feminists, homosexuals, atheists, etc. They honestly believe deep down inside that their God is one pissed off God. It's never occurred to them that many, if not most, of the problems that our country faces has to do with their bad decisions and policies. Nope, it's all the liberals fault.

These people have never accepted the New Testament concept that no longer is a nation judged as a nation but individuals are judged as individuals. It's the deep fear that they will be judged for what their neighbor does that drives them to want to control every aspect of others lives. They don't understand their own religion.

firmly believe that the country has problems because of God's judgment against the ungodliness. This is what they preach in their churches....I know, I used to sit in one of those churches. Many in my family still do. They honestly believe they have to appease God.
