Republican Mayor: The pics of me sprawled on a bed in tight-fitting underpants could be Photoshopped

It’s almost more newsworthy these days when a conservative Republican politician turns out to not be in the closet. According to Talking Points Memo, Medford, New Jersey mayor Chris Myers insists that he is not resigning in spite of a mushrooming scandal involving his purported contact with a male prostitute who he procured through the website “Rentboy.com”.

Photographs that allegedly show the mayor sprawled on a bed in a pair of tight-fitting blue Calvin Klein underwear have surfaced, as well as photos taken of the Republican politician’s ID and wallet. The Medford Courier-Post asked the mayor if there was any truth to allegations by a young man associated with “Rentboy.com” that Myers sought his services while traveling for business in California, and that during their encounter the older man had promised him a car and a recording studio.

Myers responded, “I can’t comment on something I don’t know.” He claims that the photos of him could be digitally faked and that the accusations are “ridiculous”. He told the Courier, “I believe I’ve been wronged by stories pinned on anonymous reports.”

4. Maybe the Rentboy.com man will have a different take.
They always forget that pesky little detail when they go into denial mode.

5. Wasn't there an earlier scandal where the call boy was from "Rentboy"?

Is that place some kind of honey trap? Seems weird to me that some random call boy in California would know who a New Jersey mayor was, and even weirder if the mayor used his real name & credit card to buy sex.

12. Even though he's a Rethug, I can't join the laughter about blackmailing
a guy who's unhappy enough with himself to be living in the closet. That's clearly what happened. Rentboy couldn't get him to pay up, so he outed him.

17. Then don't do anything you can be blackmailed for.
Like the diplomat back in the 50's that the KGB tried to blackmail in Moscow by showing him pictures of him and a woman they had set him up with.
They told him they would make the pictures public if he didn't tell them his country's secrets.
He responded that the pictures were pretty amazing and could he have copies for his wife AND his mistress.

18. A lot of gay men in his generation missed the revolution, unfortunately.
In most parts of the country, sodomy laws prohibited gay sex until not that long ago -- no matter whether the sex was with a rentboy or with the guy down the block. So men his age were used to hiding their sexuality; they were just as likely to get arrested or blackmailed if they had sex with a paid or unpaid partner. (An unpaid partner could blackmail, too.)

The last case I remember being prosecuted was when police accidentally broke into the wrong man's home, but arrested the two men they found there because they were in bed having sex. This was in Texas, but it could have happened in lots of states at that time. It went to the Supreme Court, which finally ruled that sex in one's own home is protected by privacy rights.

It's easy to criticize men like this guy through the lens of comfortable, socially sanctioned heterosexuality -- or through youthful unawareness of how bad things used to be. But it's not as easy when you know what he must have lived through growing up and even into adulthood.

13. I have a Question, and I do not mean this to be offensive to gays.
I'm just trying to wrap my mind around it.

What would make a gay man want to become an anti-gay politician? Are half of all republican politicians closeted gay people, or what? Sure seems that way.

Is it a mixture of self loathing and denial? Do they like to play games? What makes them tick?

19. I think a lot of these men grew up in families and in regions
where everyone was conservative. They grew up accepting the beliefs of everyone around them, and that included beliefs about homosexuality. It wasn't THAT long ago that sodomy was illegal in many states, and gay men could get arrested for having sex whether or not any money changed hands. And even the people who thought there shouldn't be criminal sanctions thought that homosexuality was a mental disease (and it was listed as such in medical books).

These men's beliefs were formed several decades ago, and they never really changed. I don't laugh at them. I feel sorry for them.

(That doesn't mean I excuse them for voting against gay rights. But this OP is about a guy who was being blackmailed by someone for wanted a fancy car and a music studio.)

15. "Could be" photoshopped?
You'd think a person would remember if they'd been photographed sprawled on a bed in their underwear.

I truly wish I hadn't clicked on the "photoshopped" link! It's too early in the morning!

Typical Republican hypocrite.
