JetBlue plane stranded on tarmac for 7 hours
(10-30) 12:18 PDT New York (AP) --

Passengers on a JetBlue plane were stranded on the tarmac in Connecticut for more than seven hours Saturday.

A passenger on a plane diverted to Bradley International Airport says the plane ran out of snacks and bottled water for the last few hours of the ordeal.

"The toilets were backed up. When you flushed, nothing would happen," said Andrew Carter, a reporter for the Florida Sun Sentinel, who was traveling to cover the Miami Dolphins game against the New York Giants. His plane took off from Fort Lauderdale for Newark International Airport at around 9 a.m. After being diverted to Hartford, the plane sat on the tarmac between around 1:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., he said.

A representative for Bradley International was not available to comment on other delays at the airport.

17. I read that many people DID call 911 and want off flight....
They were told there was nothing that could be done.. in spite of a law that says passengers can only be held 3 hours on the Tarmac.

3. I was on a flight like that. IT SUCKED!!!!
It was an American flight I was on - routing Ontario (ONT) to Dallas (DFW) to Nashville (BNA). The ONT to DFW flight got diverted to Abeliene, TX (ABL) for nearly 6 hours - I missed my connecting flight by two. The conditions for that after the first four hours were absolutely unbearable, and American did nothing to compensate us, except bump our connecting flights. I definitely know how much that sucked.

In all of the 40+ years that my Dad worked for AA, I had never heard of this.

I'm taking the bus or the train. :-) Or just staying at home.

And I don't approve of the shoplifting laws, so, as a consumer, can I refuse them? :-)

16. At least on Jetblue you can watch TV or listen to XM.
When I was on the flight from hell - we didn't even have that. I watched Family Guy reruns on my laptop's 2 hour battery - which quickly ran out. Then I just sat and stared at the back of my seat for the next four hours.

10. I didn't read the full story at link, but this clip leaves out important details.
First of all, there were several such flights, not just this particular Jet Blue flight. They were diverted to Bradley because of what is being called "infrastructure problems" at NY's JFK. I have yet to hear what those problems were. Next, and quite significant, is that the flights had the unfortunate bad luck of being diverted to an airport in the midst of a freak October snowstorm which has left nearly a million CT residents without power -- the power reportedly went out twice at Bradley while the plane was waiting on the tarmac. Bradley is a small airport, deemed "International" because it flies to Canada (and I think there is one flight to Amsterdam). So when the people were finally allowed to deplane, all of the food services in terminal were closed for the evening. I fly in/out of Bradley all the time....it is truly weird to get off your plane at night to a "closed" airport. Anyway, not sure if the story even covers any of that, but I just thought it was worth noting it's not merely another Jet Blue sucks story.

14. I was on a Jetblue plane last week that experienced mechanical problems on our way out to take-off
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 06:52 PM by high density
We were towed back to the gate. The air bridge was brought to the door of the jet and it was opened. The captain came out and said that people could get off if they wanted to, but he couldn't guarantee that they'd get back on if the problems could be fixed quickly. About fifteen minutes later, after about an hour of time sitting on the plane, it was determined that the problem could not be fixed quickly and the plane was emptied. Jetblue did their best to then accommodate passengers who had missed connections.

Power outages are no excuse. After two hours they should've had air stairs to the plane and gotten people into the terminal, but airlines seem to be incredibly nervous about doing this when they don't have normal operations at the airport.

Why lookie here... yes it has two of them who I am sure would have been more than happy to assist no matter what the status of the terminal.

I have flown sketchy airlines in Africa that handled situations like this better. Our Savannah Airlines (Nigeria) flight was delayed because the airlines jet fuel truck didn't show up, a bus pulled up along the plane they took us into town to a western style restaurant and served a full meal and then an hour or two later they drove us right back to the plane and took off right away.
