Of the half of households not paying income tax, what fraction of that
comprises households of Social Security recipients? Does anyone know?

12. This isn't a myth or a lie. It's also only a problem in that it demonstrates how many people
live in households with incomes so low that they aren't required to pay that particular tax.

18. The way they phrase it, the tone they use, make it a lie
They never say that part of that number are millionaires that pay no taxes, billion dollar corporations that pay no taxes and get taxes back. That is what makes it a lie.............

10. It's not a myth; it's a function of how low many household incomes are.
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 10:39 PM by pnwmom
However, it doesn't include the many other taxes that other low income people pay.

4. We live on a pension and SS, every April I mail a check to
to the IRS for my taxes. I have no idea how many others do. I have always considered that " half of households not paying income tax" is republican bull shit. My SIL makes 250 thousand a year, I pay more in taxes than he does.

6. Not so according to these stats...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44592106/ns/politics-white_house/#.Tq4Ot0OXudA

This year, households making more than $1 million will pay an average of 29.1 percent of their income in federal taxes, including income taxes, payroll taxes and other taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will pay an average of 15 percent of their income in federal taxes.

Lower-income households will pay less. For example, households making between $40,000 and $50,000 will pay an average of 12.5 percent of their income in federal taxes. Households making between $20,000 and $30,000 will pay 5.7 percent.

8. 'Confusion' may be w term 'taxes,' not 'Federal Income Taxes.'
Lower income pay State income + sales etc. taxes, + 'payroll' taxes.

9. Ummmm......
You're only looking at part of the whole.

If you want to look at the impact of taxes then you have to include ALL taxes.

Taxes on utilities and necessities comprise a much larger portion of the income of lower income folks. Same is true of property taxes and sales taxes.

13. That article compares apples and oranges.
For the incomes above $1 million, it refers to the percent of taxes spent on federal taxes, including income taxes, payroll taxes, and other taxes.

Households making under 75,000 are highly unlikely to be paying payroll taxes and other federal taxes in addition to income taxes.

16. Wait a minute. Why are "other taxes" included in
the percentage that the top earners pay, but not in the lower earning households. Everyone pays those "other taxes".

7. Here's a good explanation about those you're asking about. (the study in the link goes into
lots more detail).
#####

A couple with two children earning less than $26,400 will pay no federal income tax this year because their $11,600 standard deduction and four exemptions of $3,700 each reduce their taxable income to zero. The basic structure of the income tax simply exempts subsistence levels of income from tax.

Low incomes (or, if you prefer, the standard deduction and personal exemptions) account for fully half of the people who pay no federal income tax.

The second reason is that for many senior citizens, Social Security benefits are exempt from federal income taxes. That accounts for about 22% of the people who pay no federal income tax.

The third reason is that America uses the tax code to provide benefits to low-income families, particularly those with children. Taken together, the earned income tax credit, the child credit, and the childcare credit account for about 15% of the people who pay no federal income tax.
