AP dismantles Republican claim that health reform will cost jobs

By Sahil Kapur
Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 -- 9:43 am

As House Republicans prepare Tuesday to take up a bill repealing the sweeping health care overhaul, they face an awkward fact-check permeating the news wires that effectively dismantles their central argument against the reforms.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) argued in a recent report that the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, enacted last March, will cause "significant job losses" in the United States -- up to 650,000, he said -- citing the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The claim is so important to the Republican Party's opposition strategy that they've titled the bill, "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act."

But as Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar reported Tuesday for The Associated Press. the basis for their figure is "shaky" at best. He called the Republican estimate "a story of how statistics get used and abused in Washington."

3. Business as usual
It's not like those that supported and passed the legislation were completely honest.

6. The big one that keeps burning in my mind
"This will provide Health Care for Millions of Americans."

Health Insurance is NOT Health Care.

And this gem showed up today on CNN.

"The Affordable Care Act gave your family the same health protections members of Congress get," declares a cable television ad released Tuesday by the progressive advocacy group Americans United for Change. "Republicans want to take that protection away from your family."

How is shitty corrupt for profit Health Insurance anything like the Health Protections members of Congress get?

Make no mistake, the Health Insurance reform bill was a GIANT FAIL, and does nothing more than put a tiny band aid a fatal wound.

5. So the MSM is finally waking up? Shame their alarm wasn't set for last October.
Better late than never, but it still amazes me how they're so asleep on the job.

9. props to Ricardo Alonzo-Zaldivar and the AP!!!
This is the kind of journalism that there used to be and that we've missed so much, and it's wonderful to see it again!

Good reporting isn't transcribing what people, especially politicians, say and calling that "news"--it's digging into the facts.

Way to go, Ricardo! :applause::woohoo:
