Local Democrats threw a nice dinner for US Senatorial candidate Tammy Baldwin last night. Tammy is running for the seat currently filled by Democrat Herb Kohl. Herb has stated that he will not run for re-election.
The best news was the large turnout. Not so good was the average age of the audience. I suppose younger voters don't always have $25 to spend on a political dinner, but the crowd average age was somewhere between 70 and deceased. When I'm pulling the average age down, we're too old.
In addition to better food than usual on the "Rubber Chicken Circuit" (thanks Elks Lodge!) there were several inspiring speakers, culminating with Tammy's address. We raised a few bucks too!
Marty Farrell, Chair of the County Board, opened with a no-hold-barred address in which he called out "right-wing extremists" and their "millionaire/billionaire backers" for trying to steal the entire country. It was great to see Marty, an otherwise conservative appearing gentleman in his 60's, so willing to fight the good fight. No comparisons between OWS and the Teabaggers in this quarter!
Newly elected State Senator Jessica King also spoke, and was again willing to speak out against the extremism that is currently holding sway in the Badger State. Jess beat drunk and randy Randy Hopper in the recall election in August.
Tammy's speech was uncomplicated. There's a difference between right and wrong, Tammy knows which is which, and she's clearly on the side of the People. Thanks, Tammy, for visiting us in Fond du Lac last night.
Finally, while I didn't get to speak to Tammy, I did get to speak with Jess King at some length. She shares my concern regarding the Republicans multi-faceted attack on our elections and conceded that we may not be able to stop their juggernaut if we don't manage to recall Scott Walker.
