Here is a sequence of emails that resulted.

What part of "crazy weather patterns" as forecast by GW theory does this contradict?

Don't you realize--seriously--that these things actually provide further confirmation of the model?

I need somebody to answer the basic question.

15,000 to 20,000 years ago when we had over a mile of thick ice where you live, was global warming a good thing?

Scientists think that the Wisconsin/Wurm Glaciation might have wiped out all but about 19,000 people worldwide. That really must have driven the gene pool through a bottleneck. Wouldn't you want to avoid a disaster of that magnitude if you could? What kind of world do you want for your grandchild?

Certainly there can be other factors besides anthropogenic ones in climate change, particularly in the long view. The thing is, the change that's about to befall us is avoidable but private interests, driven by greed, choose to let the world crash & burn while they extract the last blood from the rest of us.

Global warming hoax.

6. Not just rises in the mean temps, but increases in the variance in a variety
of weather measures. In other words, it gets crazy faster than it gets warm.

18. Exactly.
The term "Global Warming" has been a real disservice - it truly is Global Climate Change.

7. A similar phone call yesterday.
A close relative, who also lives in southern California, called to tell me how other family members on the East Coast were affected by the snow storm. He finished by saying that this storm means Al Gore is a liar and global warming is a hoax.

When I said, "The weather is not the same thing as climate change," he yelled, "YES IT IS!" and started spouting the usual crap about temperatures 150 years ago and how much pollution Mt. St. Helens caused. He told me to look it up on the internet and I sarcastically replied, "I can't do that. I don't know anything at all about computers or the internet." He knows I make my living working on the internet, but he took that seriously even after I started laughing.

I changed the subject instead of arguing with him, but a couple of minutes later he said he had to go tie his young orange trees to new support stakes because they're blooming way ahead of schedule and are getting too top heavy to stand up under their own weight. When I asked why he thought that was happening, he was flummoxed and said he had no idea. I didn't volunteer a thing because he'd just start yelling again.

My whole immediate family (kids excluded) is like this. It's so sad it's funny.

Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real

WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

11. The real test is the mean temp in the (ant)arctic.
No jet stream influences that can cause freak weather in the populated zones and that is where the melting happens.

16. He's not a Fundie, not a creationist.
Just an authoritarian ex-State Patrol captain with enough rage under his skin for any 7 normal lifetimes. A few months ago he told me he got into a fight--an actual physical fight--with a trucker in some sort of road rage incident. He followed the trucker & accosted him, then hit him a couple of times & left the scene when the trucker ran back to his semi tractor, probably in search of a weapon. This guy is over 60 years old!
